Is sarcasm a sin?

I just heard that sarcasm is a sin. I’m worried cause I use sarcasm and irony a lot and, despite the fact that I didn’t know it supposedly was a sin - hence, I didn’t commit a sin - , it still intrigues and worries me.
Is sarcasm a sin? Is it always a sin? if so, where’s that in the Bible or the CCC???

Please explain in what context this was told to you.

I would imagine there are some circumstances that it could be… but as a general rule… I’d love to see the “logic” behind what makes it sinful.
 
If the sarcasm is intended to be taunting in nature or used to deliver a stinging rebuke, I would consider it sinful. If is it used to be ironic and humourous, then I would say it is not sin. In other words, it’s how you employ it.

there’s no context. I just read from the page of a catholic apologist “sarcasm is definitely a sin”

As far as this goes I wouldn’t ask if it is, I would ask how it is.

Some people (in general and on this forum) are quick to label something as “bad” without being able to really justify how or under what circumstances it might be considered as such.

This. If sarcasm is constantly being used to humiliate or belittle or shame another person, then the application of sarcasm would be sinful.

Agreed. Sarcasm can be very funny and innocent. It can also be very hurtful. But in the times when it is hurtful, I would say what’s really sinful is the fact that you are saying something that is hurtful to another person. Not necessarily the sarcasm itself.

If so I am in big trouble! The only consolation is a lot of my friends will be in hell with me.

This just reminded me of a conversation I had with a friend the other day.

“I’m converting to Catholicism”

we talk for a few about it then randomly he says…

“you know what the best part is?! we’ll be in hell together instead of me going to Catholic hell and you going to Jewish hell!”

Irony:
the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning:

Given the meanings above, it would appear that Sarcasm has an edge to it that is intended to hurt it’s victim and so would be sinful.
That form which would not be sinful would be irony.

Since you asked about the CCC, I thought I’d offer this, indicating some type of irony is a sin:

2481 *Boasting *or bragging is an offense against truth. So is *irony *aimed at disparaging someone by maliciously caricaturing some aspect of his behavior.

Perhaps someone else has another paragraph to offer. I note this paragraph points to motive (disparagement of another).
