Is Satan a real being or a metaphor?

:tiphat:

Did Jesus chase metaphors out of people?

Did metaphors enter swine that headed over the cliff?

Did a metaphor bring Job to ruin?

Did Jesus speak to, and be tempted by, a metaphor during those 40 days of desert?

Did a metaphor deceive Eve?

Did God make the most beautiful metaphor among His angels?

Satan is defined a number of ways, but I believe Scripture is clear that metaphor is not one of them.

As a post-modernist, I don’t acknowledge any difference between reality and metaphor, fact and fiction. In making something a thing, we use language. The relationship between language and thing is always metaphoric. Or, more precisely, language doesn’t stand for the ‘thing’ but rather creates (or ‘is’) the thing.

Metaphor and reality are co-originary.

The question, “Is Satan real or a metaphor?” is like saying “Is the month of April real or a metaphor?” All language exists in a purely metaphoric relationship to something-other-than-language.

This is a very important point, and as far as it goes here, very accurate. It tends to go with the idea that we prject the world, more thatn we perceive it. and it is very easy to see and understand that we do not perceive the world as it is, in any case. The worls we wander through is the collection of thoughts we have about it. As a side note, I will have to look and see if Qoeleth has some thoughts under the thread Why Are You a Catholic? You might imagine why.

But there are things, perceptual things, not nearly understood, that we make metaphors about. And while we can get solipsitic, ther appears to be a postulatable word beyond our perceptions and metaphores that we share, or the metaphoric people we live with and the metaphoric objects we deal with might not have the consistency they do, as far as that idea is applicable. At quantum levels, it is hard to tell what’s what at our level of perceptioon, if at all.

All that fun stuff being said, what is the point of the Devil, and what are the various histories and etymologies of names attached to those, and what functionlly does it all mean in terms of how or why or brain codes such things?

And how do we think about such things? Clearly that is a very wide range of ideas and tools brought to this discussion as we attempt to disect this questions and others, whatever our faith or lack of faith flavor is. For instance, does Curious Seed ever wonder if not the devils and deamons, but those stories themselves are the metaphores? In any case, faith or not, as I delineated in my previous pst here, there are teaching tales and paradigms that sufficiently address the idea of a Satan, Lucifer, and othe such to render a different understanding of what all that is about, if one cares to indulge in a wider and deeper kind of consideration than the ismplifications most of us appear to have grown up with.

your thoughts?
Is God for real-yes or no? Who do you believe created the fallen angel Satan/Devil/Lucifer,etc? If you say God created the Devil, then why would you doubt the fallen angel’s existence?

Ask any exorsist. He is very real. The smartest thing he has done is to lay low so folks now think he doesn’t exist, and consequently some folks do not believe God exists. Just think about if folks knew for certain that Satan exists, then they would hope and pray that God exists, otherwise we would be in one heck of a fix.

Satan is very real, no matter which name or title you use for him. Devil, Satan, Adversary, Lucifer. They all point to the same prideful fallen angel.

“To deny the existence of Satan is to deny the existence of Christ.”

Fallen angels arent they the ones that interbreeded with people and resulted giants, so they must have had a human body?
Did I miss something during 12 years of Catholic school? Can you give me a Bible citation for the story of the fallen angels and the giants? Oh, BTW, Satan and his minions? Yeah, they’re for real.

I was there too. I’m thinking that perhaps we all did, as well as acknowledging th benefits.

I’d say yes, but citing the idea of Jesus parables having at least three levels of comprehension, and that in private He taught his disciples differently, they may be "real,’ but certainly misunderstood at the folk level of religion the vast amjority of the faithful appear to be at.

I do not believe in higher entities in an anthropomorphic sense. But if you believe in God, it would be strange to deny the existence of Satan.

Funnily enough, Satanists only use Satan as a metaphor. A metaphor for somebody that stands up to the church and questions it (amongst other things).

Saint Sister Faustina, during her life was taken into hell to be witness and she describes the visit in her diaries. One comment she made was that the majority of souls who were suffering were those who did not believe in hell when they were living on the earth.

satan wishes you to forget him, consider him a fantasy, a myth, an unreal entity and in so doing you choose to reject JESUS, and you will discover and meet satan where he was sent for also rejecting JESUS - hell.

Saint Padre Pio was confronted with a man who was loudly proclaiming he did not believe in hell. St Pio was given the gift of reading the hearts of men, and after looking at this man for some time, said, “you will when you get there”.

If you are confused, then go to the Saints and listen to them. They have been declared as Saints and therefore their diaries and their written records are true.

If a person accepts the Church and it’s teachings (as originating from Jesus/God who, as Truth itself, protects it from teaching errors) then this is some of the Church’s teachings on the question:
God created Lucifer/Satin along with other angelic beings. Like all angels they were created superior (to people) in intelligence to adore God in heaven. Lucifer, the brightest angel, began to regard himself as equal to God and refused to serve Him. Consequently he was removed from God’s company, and unlike inferior humans, he could not get a 2nd chance. He lead other rebellious angels with him, while the ones who loved God remained in heaven. So there are angels who are benevolent (guardian angels) and ones who are fallen and basically have - try to ruin souls via temptation - on their daily “to do” list. Misery loves company.

Temptation is from a threefold source–the flesh, the world, and the devil and trying to resist them and put God 1st using will power alone, is sort of like bringing a knife to a gun fight. That’s why Catholics will do all these seemingly “weird” practices like adoration, & petitioning God for help, via the rosary & other prayer, fasting, the sacraments and so on. They maybe look less strange when viewed as physical-supernatural, and from an historical point that their principles are 2000+ years old.

If a person accepts~~~ They maybe look less strange when viewed as physical-supernatural, and from an historical point that their principles are 2000+ years old.
And that may also be why to some it does seem so strange.

If Satan is merely a metaphor, then so are our souls.

God bless,

In the sense the we do not directly know what pur soul is, nor our conscious relation to mind, they are both necessarily metaphors.

Satan and his demonic angels are constantly mentioned both in the OT and NT as well as the writings of the Early Church Fathers. Just read the writings of St. Anthony. Having been in a number of exorcisms, yes they are real. Spirits of complete diabolical hatred and evil that can move in and out of dimensions. Their evil presence is well experienced and supernatural manifestations are well documented. Just go up on YouTube and search on exorcisms or check out The Haunting on Discovery Channel.
