First of all, yay i’m back! Haven’t been on for a while.

Ok, the question.

I was wondering if Satan is happy with his decision to rebel against God. I mean, i’m not even sure if he can feel emotions like happiness, but is he living in constant regret, or does he love tormenting people?

Just something i was thinking about, thanks.

I always felt he couldn’t really feel happiness but didn’t care. I think he is one of the most copied characters in our time though in movies, TV, etc. and he gets a personality from that. I think a lot of people think of Satan as the “Hugh Hefner” of hell, and he has all the hedonistic pleasure of the earth but without the happiness and joy of heaven. That’s why some will say jokingly, “I’ll have a lot of company there…wouldn’t know anyone in heaven”.
It’s really not funny though, more of his “lies” as Jesus put it. If he can feel joy, it is getting more souls to dwell in hell then in heaven. My opinion of course, we wont really know until we die.

Satan fell prey to the deadliest sin… PRIDE. He basically challenged the authority and kingship of God. Whether he is happy or not (I believe not… I think he is very bitter and still full of pride) he couldn’t admit to unhappiness because his pride would never allow it.

Well now, this raises the theological question of whether spirits have emotions. I do not believe that they do, since spirits are only Will and Intellect, but I’m having trouble discerning what the pleasures of the Beatific Vision are with regards to will and intellect, and similarly the pains of hell WRT will and intellect.

More to the point of the question, tormenting others never brings true pleasure.

In thinking of satan, I can’t imagine any positive emotion such as happiness being applicable to him, even for a sinister cause of his. Arrogance and sinful pleasure, that I can imagine of him.

I would not think so…he hates God, and he hates Mankind and he does everything in his power to deprive God of his creatures…

In my opinion, happiness or joy is only possible with an element of the Holy Spirit inside oneself. My belief is that Satan’s soul died completely from God when he fell… removing any hope for salvation. Satan cannot experience joy or happiness because he is complete apostasy from God.

Bishop Sheen once remarked that greater happiness is possible only when we allow ourselves to accept the will of God in our lives gracefully- as we draw closer to God and his Will in our lives, our happiness or joy increases.

God is Love, but he can also be angry, jealous(if we worship idols) etc… Love is the very reason He created us and died for us! God is Spirit and created all other spirits, so you cannot say that spirits are only will and intelect.

And satan cannot be happy, because he hates everything.

If you read Milton, you come across the defiant lines ‘Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven.’ Speculation aside, while Satan’s own being is good in so far as God created it and sustains it (great mercy on his part) I doubt he could be truely called happy, in any sense.

I would think he’d truly be the most miserable of creatures. He is removed from the Glory of God, and therefore cannot truly be happy, but because of his sin (Pride) he will not allow himself to repent and ask forgiveness.

How is that merciful? It sounds more like watching a crippled insect die slowly, except that it never does.

I don’t see how your conclusion that spirits are not only will and intellect follows from you post.

Consider this: God is infinite, and therefore all His attributes must be infinite. Since personhood is more perfect than not being a person, we can conclude that God’s attributes are also persons.
Now, it is revealed that Jesus is the Word of God. A word originates as a thought, and so Jesus is the Intellect of God. The Holy Spirit is the Sanctifier, the Comforter, the Paraclete. These are all actions, and actions originate as an act of the will, and so the Holy Spirit is the Will of God.
Love is an action, not an emotion. It is God actively desiring our well-being.

He’s PLEASED, quite often, but not ever happy.

And yes, he does love tormenting people, but he only likes the result of his tormenting when the tormentee gives up and cures God.

He REALLY hates it when we give up our suffering as a gift to God. Satan is not at all pleased at that.

What is left out as necessary to feel emotion if one possesses will and intellect?

Any being who can experience “love” experiences “emotion”, as love is an emotion.

Is it “unpleasant” for any being to be distanced from God. Yes.

That feeling of unpleasantness is another emotion.

Tormenting others would be a Satanic Pleasure.
