I remember not being allowed to say ‘jeez’, ‘yikes’, or even ‘gadzooks’ growing up because supposedly they’re taking God’s name in vain.

I think my parents went a little overboard. Jeez…
Yikes? What does yikes really mean? This is bigyikes:bigyikes: on the smiley board… .

According to them, an abbreviated form of ‘Jesus’ spikes’, much like ‘gadzooks’ is supposedly from ‘God’s hooks’ 🤷

Doesn’t Jesus tell us to say what we mean? If you mean, “What a surprise!”, or “How scary!” or maybe, “Outrageous!”, why not try to get in the habit of saying that? If you just need an interjection, I like “Wow!” and “Whoa!”🤷

Oh. I never heard of that before. Actually, I never thought about what those words could mean .🤷

In the past couple of months I’ve been trying to reform my potty mouth. Even after I came back to Christianity, I always would argue that the commandment is not to take the Lord’s name in vain, and that the F-bomb wasn’t even in the Bible. Flawed logic, for sure.

I’ve gotten to where I use “cheesed” when I’m upset, “oh snap!” as an exclamation of surprise or revelation, and “fudge” to replace a certain four lettered word that was quite common in my vocabulary since my teenage years. I hadn’t even thought of geez not being acceptable, but thankfully I’m not too big on that word.

And I know we’re supposed to say what we mean, but sometimes we blurt out when we get into line at the supermarket and remember we didn’t get garbage bags. (Everyone around looked at me like I was a fool for yelping “oh SNAP!” right there in the check out lane) or when we hit our hand with a hammer. Agree? 🙂

Saying “Gosh” isn’t bad, even though it sounds like God.

If I said “I felling into a pile of muck” that wouldn’t be offensive. It may sound like a swear, but it isn’t.

Apparently gadzooks was a contraction for “God’s Hooks” (i.e. the nails that pinned Jesus to the cross). That being that case I don’t think that Mirdath’s parents went “overboard” with the possible exception of yikes.

When I think about it, the word Geez is simply a corrupted, shortened form of the name Jesus. Is it therefore wrong to say the word Geez?
If someone were to ask me, I would say yes, it is wrong, and perhaps seriously wrong, since it is blasphemous to use the name of Our Lord, or any Saint, in vain. This is a shortened form of the name of Our Lord, and it is therefore wrong to use it. I am not sure if it would be a mortal sin materially, but my personal opinion, which is not the opinion of an expert, is that it is a serious offense against a major commandment: Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.

I have a friend who substitutes the word “begonias” for all the swear words. If she calls you a big begonia, you’ve been insulted!

I have friend that always says “Oh my word” instead of the alternative. I always say “Oh my goodness”. You could go anywhere with this question. I think that since your intent is to AVOID taking the Lord’s name in vain, that’s probably what you really are doing.

OH NO…its the TOS thread all over again…
…but I personally wouldn’t be saying “geez”, “gosh” etc in front of the pope so why should we say these when God watches us all the time. Ive realised what a hypocrite I am…anyway

Becuase when i say geez or gosh I dont think of God, nor do I link the words as derivitives of Holy words, so there.

There are worser sins out there, but why don’t you mention your own name instead of God’s…remember to not think about yourself though while saying it. 😉

But the Good and Word are other names for God. Oops.

Actually, blasphemy or taking the Lord’s name in vain is the second commandment. There is a reason, is there not, as to why it is number two, in a list of 10? I think that the ordering of the commandments has to do with the seriousness of the question. Blasphemy is a serious offense against God and shows contempt and lack of respect.
