Hoky Smokes Bullwinkle! We need exclamations, in order to express shock, surprise, anger, etc. It’s not healthy to keep it all bottled up. I do see a distinction thought between darn, shucks, geez, etc. versus using initials (such as is used for texting or even regular language) because the initials automatically bring the profane version to mind.

I can’t help saying Geez, I never even knew that it was an alteration of Jesus, I just thought it was a harmless saying. WHY BRING THIS UP ARGH, now you will have us all who never knew this in a bad conscience everytime we say this.
from what I’ve realised there are a lot more such as Jeepers Creepers and what about Steve Irwins’s favorite quote: Crikey.

I’ve heard Leave it to Beaver say many of these expression. (I watch a lot of TV LAND)

Are you guys trying to convince me the networks were slipping in profanities and fooled the censors?

If I said Gee whiz, it would be like saying “Wow, that’s interesting” or “I didn’t know that”

The only time I can imagine it as taking the Lord’s name in vain would be if someone started to say “Jesus” and caught themselves in the middle of the word.

It’s what is in your heart no matter what word you use.

So is the OP replacing “Jesus” by saying “geez” in a derogatory way? If so it is swearing. If not, then saying “geez” is fine.

Maybe you guys should give me a list of what these words really mean so I can turn off the TV when they start cussing:

What did Jed Clampet mean when he said “Well doggie”? and “Prettier than a speckled toad”?

And Beaver’s friend. Larry M, when he said “Golly, gee, Beaver”?

… EXAMPLE: You smash your thumb with a hammer and say “praise God” out of anger and trying to avoid words you don’t want your children to hear, You Still Swore…
:rotfl:

Holy smokes, that was funny!!!

Did I just swear? Oh no, it looks like I have confess to Geez tonight.

Yes, they are. And it is not just the networks, either. It is also Catholic priests such as Father Greeley, who is slipping in profanity in his novels.
But this is not what God has commanded us with His commandment:
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.

Bob,

Today TV is blatantly filthy, included toddle shows.

But Leave it to Beaver did not slip in any profanity.

Let me draw a parallel to demonstrate the difference between geez as cussing and geez as harmless expression.

Saying someone is “articulate” has always been a compliment. (until Sen. Biden, that is)

Using the words, “He’s an articulate guy.” can be either a compliment or an insult.

Are you saying it with admiration, or with a roll of the eyes?

When Larry M. said, “Geez Beaver, what are friends for?” He wasn’t cussing Beaver out.

Sorry, but the commandment of God says differently. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Words, such as Geez, Jaysus, Cripes, Jeepers, Gee Whiz are by-words or words invented around the name of Our Divine Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. This can be checked easily by looking up their etymological derivation.

Well then, who is Louise? I grew up with “Geez Louise,” and I can’t see how that relates to Our Lord. 🤷

When I say geez I am in no way referring to Jesus. Some people might be. They might be saying Jesus and leaving off the sus. They are taking the Lords name in vain.

When I say “gee” I do not mean “Je” When I say geez I do not mean Je - sus. But I might mean “You are weaing me out with this nonsense” But instead of writing all those words, I might say “geez

By your reasoning “jump” could be a swear word. By your reasoning any term showing expression, whether good or bad is a swear word.

"I’ll get the job done, “lickety split!”. Oops! Did I just swear?

If I say “hmm, what am I over-looking on this thread” Do you also think “hmm” is a reference to the Holy Spirit.

It is what is in your heart.

It is what is in your heart.
No it is not.
Well, I pulled the trigger and killed my wife, but in my heart I still loved her. Something like that does not excuse from the commandment Thou shalt not kill.
Similarly, sloppy thinking does not excuse from the commandment of God: Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord Thy God in vain. Sloppiness of thinking is not an excuse. It is a mortal sin to disobey this commandment, but I am willing to admit that there may be circumstances which could mitigate the seriousness of the sin.

If you pulled the trigger. You had it in your HEART to shoot her.

But, I’ll concede. According to your own reasoning, Bob, you have been cussing up a storm.

You said: “Sorry, but the commandment of God says differently. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Words, such as Geez, Jaysus, Cripes, Jeepers, Gee Whiz are by-words or words invented around the name of Our Divine Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.”

Please stop, now. Go straight to your nearest Catholic church and confess your sins. And when you leave, sin no more.

BTW, the only one I agree with you on is the one highlighted in blue.

Anyone ever hear the song that went, "Jeepers, creepers, where’d you get the peepers? Jeepers Creepers, where’d you get those eyes? ?
