Is saying the word "damn" in church a sin?

This person was not in church but in the hall just before you enter the church and said the word damn. The priest yelled at this person and the person vowed to never enter the church again until that priest was gone.

Certainly this person should have been more careful about his language in a church. But the priest should not have humiliated him by yelling at him in church for such a minor infraction. If this person is Catholic, I recommend that he consider talking to the priest about the situation. If he is unwilling to do that, then he can look for another Catholic parish to attend. This incident does not however give him license to entirely abandon his obligation as a Catholic to attend Mass on Sundays and holy days.
