Is smoking a sin?

I think that it is a sin because it’s not honoring your body, which is a Temple for the Holy Spirit. I used to smoke…then I dipped in order to quit smoking. :newidea: Then it took me YEARS to quit dipping. BLECH!!! :doh2: Nicotine is extremely addictive. 🤷

Trying it? Maybe. But once you’re addicted, you’re addicted.

By the way, when I was a kid, I tried maybe a half-dozen cigs. Hated them. Thank the Lord!

I don’t think so unless it is in excess, or seriously harming others. Drinking occasionally is not a sin, but drinking heavily is. Just because it is unhealthy does not mean it is sinful. Heck, we get diseases by breathing, but that’s not a sin.

I think cigarettes are disgusting for one, but I’m fine with cigars or pipes.

Smoking as in being a smoker? (aka, an addict?)

I voted “YES and I have never done it.”

Because of massive propaganda, pro and con, no one is going to give an un-predjudiced answer. Anti-smokers will tell you it is a sin, and most people who smoke will say it isn’t.The rest will say that only excessive (self abusive) smoking is a sin, but feel guilty about it.
Lastly, there are those whose hobby is arguing on the internet…they should get a life!!!

No, it’s not a sin, it’s morally neutral. That doesn’t mean it’s a good idea though.

I smoked Marbrolo Ultra for years, and if they didn’t kill you at a sadly young age, I’d still smoke them. I sort of miss them.

👍 👍
Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, making holiness perfect in the fear of God. (2 Cor. 7:1)
Smoking, when you first try it, causes your body to rebel mightily (severe coughing and/or nausea, etc.). That right there tells you that it’s not healthy, that it’s an attack on your body, that your body wasn’t designed for that. It’s a pollutant, as well as addictive (unless you don’t inhale, which is what my grandmother did; she only smoked occasionally to “fit in” at social events—but even so, she risked getting cancer of the mouth and throat), so what better arguments do you have for not taking it up? Not to mention that it costs an arm and a leg.

I smoke… its a terrible addition… If you are asking this question for yourself as a smoker… my bet is that you have a conviction from God to quit. so this must be some form of sin… i guess.
I hear its “easy to quit” . i just haven’t tadopted the antibrainwashing technique yet. I have a book on quiting… its called …“quit smoking the easy WAY” by Allen Carr i think… i makes cents.

I agree.
In my opinion, if it is done in moderation, it isn’t sinful.
Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati smoked a pipe. People often airbrush the pipe out of his mouth in this photo though 😃 http://www.ewtn.com/saintsholy/saint_images/P/blpiergiorgiofrassati.JPG

No I don’t think that it is. I smoked as a teenager and have since quit. Never got addicted though. I have smoked occasionally since then but seem to have lost the taste for it. It’s very unusual but I guess I just don’t get addicted to nicotine. My mom is the same way. She only smokes on the weekends.

I could see heavy smoking being sinful. But there’s nothing wrong with sitting back and lighting up a corn cob pipe now and then. 👍 All things in moderation.

:hey_bud: Ditto to the above!

It’s legal and there is no abuse, here. You don’t inhale a pipe or cigar … err, you shouldn’t anyway!

Personally, I abhor smoking. I have never done it and plan on never doing it. Being around someone who smokes makes me cough and I was grateful when legislation passed in my state that prohibits smoking in restaurants.

That said, it is not necessarily sinful. As with alcohol, when it is used immoderately, it can be quite damaging to one’s health and that would be sinful. But then, when one is addicted, this diminishes their moral culpability. So pointing fingers at a smoker and crying “Sinner!” is not something I’m comfortable doing.

Yes and I’ve never done it.

By the way, it is Banned on all public places where I come from.

What the heck there are other ‘smoke-belchers’ this city has to contend with.

The acting of smoking is not a sin. However to smoke to the point where it causes noticeable to the body, personal life, or relationship with family is a sin. Just like drinking to the point that causes noticeable harm to the body, personal life, or relationship with one’s family is a sin too.

I think we’ve had this conversation more than once. Tabacco use is in and of itself morally nuetral. Modern cigarettes have many additives that make them more addictive; addiction does lessen one’s moral culpability.

The issue that is probably the most grevious with smoking (or any tabacco use) is not the smell or health issues, but the cost. Using money for a personal indulgence that is needed to keep food on the table, is indeed sinful. Using money for a personal indulgence that could be used to help others keep food on the table is not charitable (but this includes the money for a daily fancy-smancy coffee, etc.)

The health issue that is most important is also not the smoker’s health (since not all tabacoo users suffer from cancers and many other things also cause cancer), but the health of any children in the house. Second-hand smoke has been shown to increase asthma and other breathing disorders that are life-long diseases.

So in sum, *objectively *smoking is not a sin. In certain circumstances it might be.
