There’s nothing wrong with recreational smoking, but if you start having health problems and your doctor tells you to quit, it would be a sin not to. God wants us to maintain our health and live long lives. If something starts harming our health, we have to stop whatever it is. I don’t know the weight of the sin (venial or mortal). That’s something you would have to talk to your priest about in confession.

Yes Cigarette smoking is sinful ,why? Because it is said in 1 Corinthians 3:17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple It is also sins against the Holy Spirit .So it’s surely a sin

1 Corinthians 6:19,20 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20 For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.

1 Corinthians 6:12 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything.

If that’s where the bar is then (no pun intended) why isn’t alcohol sinful? It certainly does both.

Marijuana impairs you immediately and alcohol doesn’t necessarily make you drunk after one drink. But one joint will get you high

Smoking cigarettes is not sinful.

An addiction to cigarettes is a moral imperfection.

Spending money on cigarettes that should be going to more important things could rise to the level of venial (or even mortal) sin, depending on the importance of the thing being sacrificed.

Continuing to smoke cigarettes when it has become immediately detrimental to your health could rise to the level of mortal sin. For example, if the doctor tells you: if you smoke cigarettes, you will not overcome this specific illness and you will die. Notice that it’s not: eventually cigarettes will kill you. That is untrue for many, and too far removed to be an actual case of mortal sin, or even in most cases, venial sin.
is smoking marijuana sinful?

no
Recreational marijuana use would be mortally sinful in most cases. Any time you are casting aside sobriety and right reason for self-enjoyment, you engage in grave evil. This is why drunkenness is a sin, and can easily rise to the level of mortal sin if one gets too drunk. And don’t try any of the stoner BS on me either. I spent twelve years getting high as a kite every single day. I know all the rationalizations and psuedo-science.

This is incorrect teaching.

Smoking either marijuana or cigarettes is sinful.

Marijuana because it’s an illegal drug.

Cigarettes because of the health risks associated. There is no safe level of smoking - even one a week is associated with significant health risks.

I strongly suspect that people who attempt to justify things like smoking or cussing do it because they have smoking or cussing habits which they are unwilling to part with.

Smoking is always sinful since it’s always a health hazard.

Just curious if it’s sinful or not
It’s certainly not smart. And I expect God gave us brains for a reason – He expects us to use them. If you’re already smoking, the sooner you give it up, the easier it will be. If you’re not, why start?

I knew priests who used to smoke. And there were saints and popes who smoked. Tobacco, of course. I think smoking marijuana would be a sin, because you get high. Drinking would be sinful only if you get drunk.

The Church does NOT teach that smoking is sinful. It teaches that EXCESS use of tobacco is sinful. These are two different things!!

A cigar with scotch or Cognac is amazing!

Follow up question seemed necessary, because it seems smoking marijuana according to you is sinful based on the condition of its illegality. So what about places where it’s legal? Is it sinful there or would it be fine?

The Church has been relatively clear:

Medicinal usage of marijuana is okay.

Recreational usage of marijuana is not.

This is incorrect teaching.

Marijuana because it’s an illegal drug.

Cigarettes because of the health risks associated. There is no safe level of smoking - even one a week is associated with significant health risks.
Genesis 1:
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

I believe that includes tobacco, cannabis, opium poppies etc… Plants aren’t meat because we also eat animals and that is OK, so ‘meat’ is ‘to be enjoyed’ in the way God enjoys the smell of burnt meat in offerings:

Genesis 8:
20 And Noah builded an altar unto the Lord; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
21 And the Lord smelled a sweet savour; and the Lord said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

Burning plants (meat) for pleasure is endorsed in the Bible.
