Is smoking marijuana always a sin?

But to truly be fair and honest, what would cause an MD to recommend pot for anxiety and depression, without revealing its potential dangers and without it having FDA approval or any scientific evidence that it’s effective for such mental disorders? Yes, drugs are often prescribed for medical purposes other than that for which it was approved, but such a decision should be based on published, trustworthy, research. I understand that pot can be beneficial to increase appetite and decrease nausea, but in such cases, it should be of pharmaceutical quality, as is the case for Marinol.
Maybe you had a bad doc, or he was attempting trial and error on the dosage and strain. There are other doctors better versed in the details. However, MDs are not PharmDs so there’s that.

Or it could be that pot is simply bad for you in the long run, which I personally believe to be true. An MD who supports marijuana usage for mental health issues is an imbecile, and should not be practicing medicine! Not that pharmaceutical companies are that much better. Spirituality is to be much preferred.

To be fair, all medicinal drugs can have terrible side effects…different people react differently.
You beat me to it. I was on benzos for anxiety and they made me suicidal. So they increased the dose and I got more suicidal…dumped tham and no longer suicidal.

same dr who doles out benzos etc without warning of side effects… and research? Thalidomide and opren enough for you?

Up to each of us to learn what any drug etc will do and take responsibility for what we put into our bodies.

In what way , please?

Recreational marijuana is a sin and likely a grave sin. It can lead to eternal damnation.

Whether they are young or old isn’t relevant to the act, except those of more advanced years are - generally - less clouded and less ignorant and so all the more culpable for their actions.
How can you say it’s a damnable sin? On what authority do you have to say that?

I fully admit that I take psychostimulants to pull myself out of depression, and I take Xanax to rid myself of anxiety. But spirituality has become central to my treatment, and contemplation, I believe, is responsible for the rapid dissipation of symptoms that I’m currently experiencing. I have greatly reduced my reliance on several pharmaceutical medications that were causing serious side-effects.

So marijuana is NOT for you. No need to make a blanket statement for everyone else.

There are many psychiatrists and doctors who feel the exact same way and feel that marijuana is very dangerous to those suffering from anxiety and depression and that it’s a big scam. What I said was not meant as a blanket statement where pot was just detrimental to me, but a true warning that using it to treat mental health issues is simply a big scam that society needs to be made aware of. Again, this being a Catholic site, I feel obligated to tell people with mental illnesses to stay far away from pot and to seek God instead, along with a well trained professional if need be, to treat their illness.

Like several psychiatrists tried to warn me, using pot to treat mental illnesses is a propaganda lie that should not exist in society. Why such a lie exists is beyond me! Its use is detrimental in general. Marijuana is a dangerous recreational drug that should have no place whatever in psychiatry.

There are psychiatrists using marijuana as a way for those addicted to heroin and other opiods to wean off. It has some place in a controlled manner.

Violating the just laws of a legitimate authority is sinful as we are called to be obedient to the government. (Romans 13)

Of course if it is not exercising lawful authority (such as allowing abortion) we are not required to follow it. Such instances should be decided by the appropriate Church authorities.

IF Marijuana was legal where you live then it MAY not be sinful but it is almost assuredly not productive. (though getting high would of course be sinful and if you smoke it you are pretty much assuredly going to get high)

I have seen countless lives ruined by Marijuana and would HIGHLY counsel anyone and everyone to have nothing to do with it even if it was legal. I have seen first hand the dramatic physical and mental effects it causes. Those who say its not addictive or that’s its not unhealthy are wrong.

I have had this question pop up from both Catholic and non Catholic friends.

What I tell them is what I have been told. Essentially, that pot is a sin because it gets you high. This is the intention of the user when they smoke it recreationally. When I go have me a beer, I may seek to become buzzed at most and still not be committing a sin. Heck, some people just drink for the taste and don’t even become buzzed. If I get drunk, that is sinful, because we place ourselves in the near occasion of committing other sins when we lose our facaulties to such an extent.

Now, I have never smoked pot. But I have heard that typically it will get you high much faster than alcohol will get you drunk, and that there is not really an inbetween “buzzed” stage where you can feel the effects but still maintain control over all your facaulties.

if I were to learn that pot can be smoked recreationally without getting high out of your mind but only slightly “buzzed” at most, then I would be more likely to say it is not a sin, granted it is legal. but up until this point, I had not heard such a thing. Any one here who has smoked pot is welcome to correct me in this matter.

Do you feel the same way about cigarettes? And if not, why not? Eternal damnation - really?
Check the effects of tobacco and marijuana. Its quiet obvious that they both react differently. Tobacco affects more physically than mentally and marijuana, vice-versa. Not even one person whom I know or heard in my entire life had smoked or smokes weed with the intention of not going high. But that’s not the case with liquors or cigarette. Please do not think I support drinking or smoking cigarette. All I’m trying to point out is weed is more dangerous than others(drinks or cigarette). Its a low level drug and has pushed/led soo many to proceed to the next/higher level drugs. Don’t do it either be it legal or illegal. And its the same with other stuff as well. Please do not compare the wine at Cana. 1) It carries a greater meaning/sign than to be used for argumental purpose. 2) Wine can consumed, but not at the desire of getting drunk.

Psychs use all kinds of drugs etc I would not touch. That is no recommendation.

I should think that everybody here has a working conscience and can figure out based on a fair evaluation of all the circumstances involved whether their personal use of marijuana, alcohol, tobacco, coffee, or cheez doodles constitutes a sin, without needing to take a poll or consider a vast number of other opinions on the matter.
But maybe I expect too much.

If you’re using it for medical purposes, and it’s legal for medical purposes where you live, I do not think it would be a sin. However, I strongly advise you to stay away from it, even if it’s legal where you live! I believe I was seriously lied to when I was told by an MD that it could help my anxiety and depression. In reality, there is no good scientific proof for these claims, and I eventually experienced severe panic attacks and Alzheimer’s-like symptoms! When I quit pot, these side-effects disappeared completely. Again, these serious side-effects did not occur immediately but did show up with continuous usage. Even with short-term usage, a cognitive decline is most obvious.
I agree no sin if taken for medical purposes but that is conditional upon it being prescribed by a doctor and not taken because the individual decides for themselves he or she needs it for medical purposes.

Weird point, considering that Christ converted water into wine at the end of the feast, not at the beginning, after they had already drank a good amount. As Thomas Aquinas may or may not have actually said, drinking “to the point of hilarity” is probably licit on occasion.
