Is smoking pot or getting drunk a mortal sin?

First of all, do we now call it a mortal sin or serious sin? I read ina book that getting drunk or the abuse of alcohol is a mortal sin. I have some members of my family who think getting drunk or smoking marijuana is okay. I know it’s not but I need a definitive explanation of the severity. They have been told by some priests that it’s not that bad and still can receive
Eucharist. I need clarification on this and what doest the Church teach in abuse of alcohol and drugs. Thanks
