Is snitching a sin

I feel so childish asking this but here goes.

I would feel that it is wrong to snitch but what about street thugs who commit serious crimes intemadate others not to “snitch on them”

I think that “snitching” corresponds to what appears in Catholic teaching as detraction. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, detraction is the sin by which “without objectively valid reason, discloses another’s faults and failings to persons who did not know them.”

The key phrase here for answering your question is “without objectively valid reason”. It is not a sin to reveal the misdeeds of another if there is a good reason to do so. For example, if people are acting against the common good, let’s say by committing acts of vandalism, it would not be a sin to report them.
 
It is my belief, that as a law-abiding citizen, it is my DUTY, to inform the appropriate authorities that a crime is being committed.

If this is what you mean by “snitching”,
then I think it would be a sin NOT to “snitch”.
 
I really don’t understand the negative attitude many people have about “snitching,” especially when it involves more serious situations. If I knew there was a violent person on the streets that had committed a crime and didn’t report it, that wouldn’t exactly make me feel good I’ll tell you that!

No snitching is not a sin. It can be an act of courage!👍

Indeed! It is a DUTY as someone said. Why wouldn’t you “snitch” on someone breaking the law, doing something evil, etc?
 
If he is a Cleric then he might be referencing the secrecy of the confessional;)

This is a could be, might be IF kind of question.

One would have to know the circumstances and motive as well as the likely consequences of the action.

Differing circumatancesn could make it a sin or an moral obligation.🙂

I think it’s not a sin if it aids in justice for the greater good.
 
If you’re doing it for the sake of getting someone into trouble and to stir up stuff, then yes. Reporting a crime is not a sin. Telling your friend’s probation officer that he’s violating his abstain from alcohol condition isn’t a sin.
