Interesting thought–can there ever be mitigating circumstances when it comes to mortal sin? If so, is it possible to have them for one sin and not another? Why?Stealing is a sin, period. But certainly there are situations, or mitigating circumstances that lessen a person’s culpability. EG, if a person’s family is starving to death, and THEY ARE AFRAID OF DYING, OR THEIR CHILDREN DYING, they might steal food or money to buy food to save the lives of their children. Would that be a mortal sin? I doubt it, especially when someone is doing it to save their lives.
