Is Sunday Mass attendance necessary?

I have a friend who claims to be Catholic but only attends church for weddings and funerals. When asked why he doesn’t attend, he claims that being a good person and believing in God is sufficient. Additionally, he feels that God doesn’t have an active role to play in our day-to-day lives (i.e., live a good life and in the end you’ll be judged accordingly). I presume this may be a key reason why he doesn’t attend church since “nobody’s listening”.

He agrees that the Bible is the inspired word of God so I’d like an answer that is biblically based if possible.
