I will occasionally leave my phone on vibrate mode during Mass and find myself responding to texts. I will also occasionally check a football score online. Is this sinful even if I do so discretely and quickly?

It is not for us to say if you commit sin or not but it would be a good idea to not bring your phone in the church. While you are at Mass you are there to participate in the Mass and have due reverence to Our Blessed Lord who is present. This is about you and your conscience and you have to decide if you can give around an hour to Our Lord without outside distractions.

Pray to God about this.

God bless

:dts:
Show some respect to the house of GOD and leave your mobile devices at home !

I can see where people who are on call for emergency work might need to leave their phones on vibrate and check and maybe even respond to text messages, but for the average person it’s an unnecessary distraction. Football scores can wait until after Mass is over.

Most people, when they are hosting others at a dinner, consider it rude if one of the guests is constantly checking his/her electronics and ignoring the very live people around them at the dinner. Rude behavior is considered offensive.

If it’s considered rudeness in a social situation to be distracted and absorbed by your electronics, imagine how Our Lord feels about it if you (or anyone else) is checking sports teams’ progress or texting someone else about a trivial matter instead of paying attention at the greatest “dinner” this side of heaven, and so much more, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. And since one definition and feature of sin is an offense against Our Lord, if you think it through a little, yes, it is considered sinful.

OK, I’ll take this as a serious question.

Yes, it is a sin to text during Mass, and to check football game scores. During Mass we are obliged to give our full attention to the readings, to our responses, and to the rite. Sometimes we are distracted by involuntary thoughts and what is happening around us, but we must do all we can to remove any distractions. This means we should turn off our cell phone (“off”, not “silent”). If there is a serious reason that we must leave it on (in silent mode), such as being on call for an emergency, then we should leave it on for only that purpose. Medical people might be in this situation regularly, but most people are not. There has only been one time in 10 years that I left my cell phone on during Mass.

(and, mate, if you are an Aussie, then please replace “cell” phone with “mobile” 🙂 )

You are in the presence of God. Physically. Our entire focus should be on Him at the Mass. On the wonderful, beautiful sacrifice that is made for our sake.

Turn your phone off. Leave it in the car. It’s disrespectful at the very least.

The Eucharist is very, very special. Appreciate the Mass:

“God gave Himself to you: give yourself to God.” – Blessed Robert Southwell

“He loves, He hopes, He waits. If He came down on our altars on certain days only, some sinner, on being moved to repentance, might have to look for Him, and not finding Him, might have to wait. Our Lord prefers to wait Himself for the sinner for years rather than keep him waiting one instant.” – St Peter Julian Eymard

You are being disrespectful to God.

It bothers me when I am talking to somebody (not during Mass) and they stop me so they can reply to a text; imagine how Jesus Christ feels when you ignore Him at Mass to check your texts!

I leave mine at home, it’s not important is it?

Suppose a man took his fiancee out to a wonderful dinner in a rotating restaurant and she kept texting and checking her friend’s twittering about a shopping trip.

Your phone is distracting you; leave it in the car.

Here is a little article on distractions during prayer. Also, praying the Rosary every day would help you learn to focus better during Mass. When I am not praying the Rosary well, I use a Scriptural Rosary to help me. Meditating on the Sorrowful Mysteries has helped me focus more on the Mass.

I have noticed the prayer is like anything else: the more you do it, practice 🙂 the better you get at it.

It could be a sin. If it distracts you that much at Mass either leave it in your car locked up or take the battery out before Mass, and put the battery in 1 pant pocket, the phone in the other. God deserves a few hours of tech free time from us. Unless you are on call for your job or a sick/injured family member that you care for, then the phone should be either OFF or muted, off is preferred. I always turn my phone volume to mute when going inside church for Mass, or any other thing & it remains in my purse/handbag until Mass is done.

I sat near a family that allowed their daughter of about 4 or 5 years to play games with silent volume near me at Mass Saturday evening. I am quite surprised it was going on during Mass, before Mass did not bother me, but when you go to sit down and see that light shining and stuff, that is distracting & also rude to others nearby. I found it hard not to have uncharitable thoughts towards the adult that allowed her to play the game at Mass instead of trying to imitate the adults near her even if part of the time she held onto to a stuffed animal during the rare times the light wasn’t coming from their pew from the cell phone game playing.

Yes.

Would you text when in a meeting with your Boss?
Would you text when meeting the President? The Queen? Your favourite musician/actor/hero?

Switch it off!

Leave it at home.

You are addicted, but leave it at home.

Got along just fine without it for years and decades.

Nothing is THAT urgent. [Unless you are an on-call emergency room doctor or on-call firefighter.]

Otherwise, leave it at home.

👍 Well-said! 👍

This certainly could rise to the level of being sinful. Would you bring a radio into Mass and listen to it? Would you sit and talk to your neighbor out loud during Mass? I hope the answer is no. This is just the electronic equivalent.

We are to actively participate in Mass. Texting and checking sports scores shows serious disrespect to Christ our Savior.

I can’t believe anyone would actually think it’s ok to text during mass. Unless there is some kind of an urgency and you are expecting to hear about it, there is no way to justify this. How old are you anyway?

I think the poster is young but then again so many own cell / mobile phones these days, and such a large age range. I would say NO to using electronics at Mass for ALL ages, and the only people that should even have their phones on vibrate are those on call for their jobs or care of an ill (or injured or elderly) family member.

this is unthinkable
unless you are on the transplant list and waiting for news that your new kidney is available there should be no reason for checking your messages.

Your attention is on the sacrifice that Christ made for you taking place on the altar. There is nothing, but nothing, more important in your life for that period of time.

you asked, I answered, so don’t bother complaining about hearing the truth.

Agreed. But I believe only illness/injury is an excuse to use the phone during mass.

I’m just amazed that someone would actually wonder if it’s ok to use it to check up on football scores.
