Is that true about Martin Luther ?

I am aware of Luther going through self-mutilation as a way to express penance but I believe that was the norm during the 1500’s for religious.
I would be interested in any sort of documentation for this claim. I don’t recall ever hearing this about Luther- I assume it’s within the realm of possibility, but I am skeptical.

I believe it is well-known that as an Augustinian monk, Luther practiced extreme penance such as extensive fasting, whipping himself, etc.

You can find accounts of this on Google.

We also need to distinguish between antisemitism and antijudaism. The antisemitism of the nazis was race-based. The antijudaism of Luther’s era was a bias against the Jewish faith

Luther’s time was not devoid of antisemitism.

In 1506, after an episode of famine and bad harvests, a pogrom happened in Lisbon, Portugal,[28] in which more than 500 “New Christian” (forcibly converted Jews) people were slaughtered and/or burnt by an angry Christian mob, in the first night of what became known as the “Lisbon Massacre”. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pogrom

I believe you are correct. I have heard he was anti judaism from many Lutherans. I do not believe he had dislike for the people but rather their faith. He was not really a fan of anabaptist as well.

We do not need drunk pastors on the forum. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Hope your new congregation is treating you well!
Well, I try to keep all imbibing for after my duties are finished for the day. The parish is treating me well, but we are still in the “honeymoon” phase.

I understand “self mutilation” to be the practice of someone cutting themselves. On the other hand, I’m not exactly sure what you meant by “self-mutilation.” Is “self-mutilation” the same thing as “extreme penance such as extensive fasting, whipping himself”? Certainly there is historical information that Luther practiced “extreme penance.” I am not though familiar with any historical information that Luther purposefully cut himself- unless you simply are equivocating self-mutilation" with “whipping himself,” which I suspect is the case.

If you have any historical information pertaining to Luther purposefully cutting himself (other than “whipping himself”), I’d very much be interested in seeing it.

Here is a link to a simple Google search using the words “Martin Luther” and self mutilation. You’ll notice very little helpful returns, which again, implies to me that we’re not using the phrase “self-mutilation” in the same way.

Luther was not a antisemite: he was quite joy-filled and happy with jews who converted to Christianity.

An antisemite hates all ethnic jews regardless of their religion (or lack of it.)
I would be surprised if PBS drew the distinction … but I find it even more surprising that they didn’t mention it at all. (A potential explanation would be “Mentioning that isn’t something that would speak to their target audience” … but then who would that target audience be? Radically-conservative Christians?)

There is a thread here titled Nuttiest Things Non-Catholics Have Said or Done Around You Because You’re Catholic, I think that the same could be said about the Lutherans. If you don’t take some time to do some research before posting then don’t post and put your foot in your mouth.
Lutherans do like to drink beer when being social, personally I like Yuengling.

I have not read anything about Luther cutting himself either.

On another note, I remember reading somewhere that Luther would take hours in Confession because he was worried about not remembering every sin he had committed. Maybe you can share this link, if true? 🙂

Poor choice of words. Flagellation seems like self mutilation to me but obviously the two forms of self injury are different.
