I did not grow up going to confession, but I’ve been going regularly for the past couple of years now. Most of the time, the priest will indicate when I should say the Act of Contrition, but there have been a few times when I finish confessing my sins and the priest immediately tells me my penance, says the prayer of absolution, and dismisses me. Is saying the Act of Contrition necessary for a valid confession? If so, is it sufficient for me to say it privately after confession if not prompted by the priest to say it during confession?
