Is the Alleluia before the Gospel a participation for all or entertainment?

In my parish we have a wonderful new youth choir.“Bless their hearts”. I don’t want to come across as a complainer, although I do miss exclaiming the alleluia at mass in worship. Because our choir sings the alleluia in a way that’s becoming more of an entertainmment, because in Mass I have taken notice nobody is participating in the Alleluia myself included. The high notes and the fast way its sung broken up makes it hard to participate. here’s an example "AH AH AH AH AH AH AH AH AH LE E E E E E E E E UUUUUUUUUU IA. I always sung it in the form of a dirge, the choir sings the first alleluia, symbolizing the angels and saints in heaven, then we on earth repeat the alleluiah, then both heaven and earth join together in the Alleluia at once to prepare for the reading of the Gospel. So is this a time to worship or be entertained by our talented youth choir. I mentioned this to our choir director, Im finding the solos are continuing. Any body got any suggestions? I do miss participating, but the youth choir is entertaining.

It is meant for the participation of all.

I absolutely love the one that our children’s choirs sing – “ale, ale, ale, luuuuuuuuuia, ale, ale, ale luuuuuuuia, ale, ale, ale, luuuuuuuuuuuuia, alleluia alleluia <fanned, wiggling fingers rising up to the glory of God>”

That one is sung so loudly, and participated in so fully by everyone, that it is our priest’s favorite as well.

Personally, I dislike “dirges”, as they are such downers. We are there to praise and worship God, and instead some of those songs are downright depressing.

I ran into a similar problem today at my parish.

There was a cantor who appears to be fairly new, so I don’t know if the choice for the “Gloria” was hers or the new Music Director’s.

It was completely tuneless, and although people tried to follow in the beginning, it was clear that this became a solo for the cantor all by herself.

Being that it was just a bad song, completely tuneless with no rhyme or reason, resembled random notes put together, in my opinion, did not glorify God, but rather glorified the range the cantor had.

I used to cantor myself, but the songs were easy to follow, everyone knew them, and the point was to lead the singing.

For the Gloria and Alleluia, the people are to join in the praise and worship.

How sad when this doesn’t happen.

Was the Alleluia today a special occasion, prompting special music or something, or is this a habitual thing which turns the choir into performers?
