Is The Assumption 8/5 still a Holy Day? Are there Holy Day Masses Anymore?

Looked on my Diocese’s website to find Holy Day Mass times at any nearby parish that could accommodate my schedule tomorrow.

Found some daily mass times I can’t do because of work in the morning. But scarcely any evening masses … and no mention of holy day schedules anywhere.

I know that sometimes a Bishop rules that the following or previous Sunday’s liturgy can be adapted to honor the Holy Day (of obligation?) … but there used to be holy day mass schedules listed.

The feast of the Assumption was one of the great feast days of the Church. The USCCB Daily Readings site lists the solemnity of the Assumption as tomorrow 8/15. Sunday is listed just as the 20th Sunday in Ordinary time.

Confused. Seems there should be more info for worshippers on the diocesan site. Maybe these are covered in the local parish bulletins. But the omission of any reference to holy days is … again … 🤷

Thought there’d be additional evening masses for the feast of the Assumption.

In Australia there are only 2 holy days not on Sundays: The Assumption and Christmas.

In Ireland we always had a special mass schedule with vigils etc. for holy days. However in Australia I could find no mention of new mass schedules online for any of the churches I usually attend. I don’t remember it being mentioned at mass on Sunday and I neglected to read the bulletin so it may have been mentioned in there.

I showed up at a typical weekday mass time and they celebrated the feast of the assumption at that regular time. So I’m guessing if there was no mention online or in the bulletin then they will go with the regular mass times?? Unless it’s one of those small parishes where the holy day schedule “goes without saying” 🤷

There are Masses for 8/15 Assumption all over the place where I am in US, including some evening Masses. I suggest you try Masstimes.org to see if there is one near you.

Also, if in doubt, you should call your parish about Mass times. In some cases they’ve forgotten to list the Holy Day in the bulletin in the past in my parishes.

I don’t know about the US, it may be a day of obligation. It used to be in my country but isn’t any longer though many still do attend Mass on the Feast of the Assumption.

I just came from mass. It is still a Holy Day of Obligation in Texas Dioceses. Even if it’s not a day of obligation, it’s certainly a wonderful excuse to attend mass 😃

Our parish has a morning mass, and an evening mass for the Assumption of our Blessed Mother.

Just out of interest, isn’t the feast of the Assumption on 8/15 (15th August), not 8/5? I hope so, as I have just posted a letter to a Catholic friend, in which I wished them a happy Assumption Day today.

Yes it is most certainly on the 15th.

It’s today. I assume (heh) that 8/5 in the subject line is a typo.

It’s still a holy day of obligation in England and Wales. We still have these four:
  • Christmas
  • Ss. Peter and Paul
  • Assumption
  • All Saints
The others have been transferred to Sunday.

It’s not a day of obligation in Canada. We’re down to Christmas and Mary, Mother of God (Jan 1)

I did not come to this thread expecting to be so disappointed.

Today is a day of obligation in the Archdiocese of Denver, CO.

Happy Feast of the Assumption, everyone!

Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with you!

We’re having a huge celebration tonight at 7 PM, including a new home shrine Marian devotion in English and in Spanish, along with the kickoff of the 54 day Novena for our nation.
Been planning it for weeks. My choir is singing the Caccini Ave Maria. 😉

Today is the Holy Day, not tomorrow, so perhaps that is the issue? We went to the vigil Mass last night, date 8/14. In our parish, we also had morning Masses and an evening Mass today, date 8/15.

That sounds nice. I went to the Feast of the Assumption. Group rosary outside, my own Novena for our Nation rosary inside, awesome Italian food, and a nighttime Mary procession with fireworks at the end. There is also a daytime Mary procession that I’ve been to in the past, but I couldn’t arrive early enough for that this year. This was the 119th Feast held by this particular church. So nice that they kept the tradition through all the neighborhood’s ups and downs. It’s now become a local institution, draws lots of non-Catholics and is a big fundraiser for the church.

That sounds amazing. It is so good to hear about parishes really celebrating the feasts.

Yes, it was wonderful.
The home devotion got off to a great start, the bi-lingual aspect was so seamlessly done, and the church was absolutely PACKED.
Here’s the picture of our main Statue: The Environment committee put a beautiful veil on her, and wrapped her in a blue silk tapestry, with a crown of blue roses. Beautiful lilies in front of her, and a huge arrangement of white and yellow flowers in front of the altar.
