I have a strong devotion to the Archangel and have pictures of him vanquishing the devil. The only thing I want to know is if that battle was in the Bible, or was it just a legand? Please help!!!

Apocalypse 12:7, “And there was a great battle in heaven, Michael and his angels fought with the dragon.” St. John speaks of the great conflict at the end of time, which reflects also the battle in heaven at the beginning of time.

I also have a strong devotion to St. Michael the Archangel. I just bought a St. Michael chaplet which I simply adore. It has great prayers and is easy to follow because it’s so similar to the rosary. Do you have one of those? I bought mine for $8.00 at the local Catholic bookstore.

Peace…

Jude 1:9 (New International Version)

But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”

Jude quotes from a book called the Assumption of Moses.

Shando - that’s a great idea. Have you tried posting this in the “Catholic Living” or “Devotional” sections of these forums? You might get more responses.

There is also mention of a battle in which Michael was involved in Daniel 10 vs. 12-14.

Here’s a problem. The whole theology on angels is very weak. As to St. Michael in Revelations. Well, some now say that book is a huge metaphore about the Mass-- the Supper of The Lamb. Interesting? Remember, all things Catholic might be open to disagreement.

Personally, I believe that “spirits” exist. after all,God sent “beings” – angels, spirits?-- many times in Scripture, but as to the existence of a “body” of beings higher than humans, but lower that God, is not clear. No harm in believing, as long as the action following from that belief does not lead e to superstitious devotions.

Why do you say it is weak?

It is about heiarchy. For instance, no St. has more sway with God than Mary.

Here is the link where you could post in the Spirituality sub-forum:
forums.catholic-questions.org/forumdisplay.php?f=19

And this is a thread about angels that you might enjoy. There are some graphics of St. Michael there, if I remember correctly:

OK. Give me the source. I’m open to learning.
Start here: aquinasonline.com/Topics/angels.html
Move to here, about a third of the way down the page: newadvent.org/summa/1.htm
And here: doctorsofthecatholicchurch.com/T.html

Hopefully, these will lead you to several other interesting and informative texts. Here, too, Google, is your friend. Googling “angel theology” will cough up a good week’s worth of reading on the subject - just ensure that each source is reasonable and rational to your purpose of learning. For instance, a write-up of angels on atheist.org would be questionable in its content and intent 😉 The unfortunate nature of the internet is that it leaves the reader to sift through to sort the grain from the chaff, and, in many cases, the reader is ill-equipped to do so…
