Is the belief that believers in heaven will convince God to bring all those in hell to heaven orthodox?

I serve as the chaplain of a non-denominational Christian school in Texas. One of my students, who is a Catholic, has lately been espousing the belief that believers in heaven will pray fervently and thereby convince God to change his mind and bring all those who are in hell into heaven.

What is this view called?

Does it fit within the realm of orthodox Catholicism?

The Catholic Church does not teach that anyone may go from hell to heaven. Hell is an irreversible choice of an unrepentant soul. The belief you are referring to is called by several names: universal reconciliation, universal salvation, or Christian universalism. It is not a teaching of the Catholic Church. Hell is the free and irrevocable choice of the unrepentant soul, God would be violating the individual’s free will if He brought them into His presence.

Catechism of the Catholic Church on hell:

1035 The teaching of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity. Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, “eternal fire.” The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs.
