Is the book of Revelation mostly literal or mostly symbolic?

What does this have to do with the book of Revelation? It is considered canonical by Catholics, Protestants, and Orthodox.

No, it is a real actual book. One can purchase it at Borders, Barnes & Noble, ect. Or on Amazon, I imagine. I have it sitting on my bookshelf. 🙂

Well,I want whatever it was that John had on the day he had those visions. 😛

Seriously though, Revelations is both symbolic and literal. The first part is John once again calling the churches he established back to the true way. Too many pagan ideas and some new heresies were already creeping their way into the new faith. John was reminding them that he was the last of the Apostles who lived with Christ and what he taught them was the truth straight from Jesus.

The Apocolyptic chapters that follow are symbolic. Many here might disagree with me but all that symbolism was meant for one thing and that was to bring comfort and assurance to the early christians that the persecutions from Rome and others would be dealt with.

That is not to say that Revelations can’t bear meaning for us today. How often are we confronted with different ideals than what the Church prescribes to? How often do we look at these different ideals as mere harmless fads? Persecutions are an ongoing trauma too. Look at the martyrs in Iraq, India, China, Columbia and South Africa to name a few.

As far as the end times go, Jesus said it best, “Only the Father knows…” We can be assured of one other thing and that is judgement will come from God and no one else. There will be none left behind nor will Satan carry anyone off who is not first judged by God. We give the demon far too much credit where he is undeserving and far too little where he does.

Both St.Jerome and Pope St.Gregory the great wrote extensively about germatria it’s significance in scripture .

Sir Isaac Newton wrote more about germatria and numbers in scripture then he did about the theory of gravity.

In my interpretation, the events described in the Book of Revelation are about to begin. I know that many persons are disarming Revelation by saying that it does not predict future events, but that claim will be proven wrong very soon.
 
I heard that the eastern church actually condemmed the literal reading of Revelations as a heresy.

Revelations is mostly historical using an apocalyptic style of writing.

It’s a message of encouragement with eventual Church triumph. We are supposed to find hope in John’s message - not occasion for fear!

We are not anywhere near “end times”. We have not even had the conditional minor chastisement yet (now this could be coming soon). But the conditions for anti-christ are no where near correct. We have to have a general and full falling away among believers. While there are problems in the Church at various places there is by no means anyway to characterize it as wide-scale falling away and abandonment of belief in God. We are likely many centuries from end times conditions.

Of course if this positive word gets out then a lot of dispensational authors marketing to a gaggle of fundamental bed-wetters are going to have to get real jobs and stop preaching doom-and-gloom to keep everyone scared and coming back to buy new self improvement tapes and bumper stickers (reading “warning this car will be pilot-less when the rapture comes”).

This is a golden era of opportunity for salvation for the planet and The Church. All indications from scripture are that we are soon going to experience a renewal in faith and recommitment to God and enjoy an incredible new golden era of peace under a holistic faith. If more people and clergy will pray their rosaries daily, and do the Divine Mercy devotionals - its going to happen.

People just don’t seem to get it that God started a New Covenant with humanity 2000 years ago and calls us to friendship and His goodwill. He is not up there waiting to blast us into oblivion. He is angry at the atrocities yes but the Church’s prayers and the intercessions of the saints (especially Mary) are holding back His wrath to give us time to get more converts and to repent. The Church triumphs in the end.

As soon as people wake up to what it is God is offering us we can start to get onto bigger and better things. Come on people - start praying more. I’d like to see this in my lifetime.
