I’m reading Peter Kreeft’s book “Making Choices-practical wisdom for everyday moral decisions” at the suggestions of another Catholic on this forum. It spells out very clearly what is happening in our society now in easily understandable terms. In some ways it was downright scary, but he points out that from a strictly historical viewpoint, things have been worse at various times throughout these 20 centuries since Jesus came among us. He also makes the point that " bad times are for good people and good people are for bad times. Crises are for goodness and goodness is for crises. All the saints lived in the middle of crises. St Augustine lived in bad times and wrote The City of God to show us that even when the whole world comes tumbling down around us, even when Rome and civilizaiton falls and tomorrow morning is the dark AGes- even then we are to look up and work and hope and be joyful, because we are citizens not of the dying world but of the living city of God. We may live in the dying City of the World, but we must live by the principles of the imperishable City of God. We need heaven-sent ethics for a hell-bent world."
Pray and do penance, receive the sacraments regularly, and evangelize our lost brothers and sisters at every turn.
 
Men, Children and Church Attendance
S. Michael Craven of the Center for Christ & Culture recently published an article, Fathers: The Greatest Influence
in which he references a Swiss government study published in 2000. Here is a summary of their findings:

Mother and Father attend church regularly
33% of their children will end up attending church regularly
41% of their children will end up attending church irregularly
25% of their children will end up not attending at all

Mother attends church regularly. Father attends church irregularly.
3% of their children will end up attending church regularly
59% of their children will end up attending church irregularly
38% of their children will end up not attending at all

Mother attends church regularly. Father does not attend church at all.
2% of their children will end up attending church regularly
37% of their children will end up attending church irregularly
60% of their children will end up not attending at all

Father attends church regularly. Mother attends church irregularly.
38% of their children will end up attending church regularly
37% of their children will end up attending church irregularly
26% of their children will end up not attending at all

Father attends church regularly. Mother does not attend church at all.
44% of their children will end up attending church regularly
22% of their children will end up attending church irregularly
34% of their children will end up not attending at all

Are the fathers in your church attending regularly?
 
Do you know the saddest thing I ever heard the other day? I went to a catechist meeting and was lamenting the fact that the kids only seem to attend class every other weekend. One teacher said she knew why…there are so many divorces in our parish, that the kids can only attend religious ed on the weekends they are with the parent who believes in bringing them to Mass!

That is why my brother made it part of the divorce agreement that his children regularly attend CCD classes and receive the sacrements. Ex was forced to comply or loose part of the child support.
