Is the "Catholic Charismatic Movement" dead?

Did it flame out? I rarely hear about it anymore outside of this board.
 
Well I don’t know about anywhere else. But here in the L.A. Arch-
diocese and the surrounding dioceses. Every year on Labor Day
Weekend, SCRC (Southern California Renewal Communities) holds its annual Catholic Renewal Convention at the Anaheim
Convention Center, Anaheim, CA. It attracts a few ten of thousand
It has 40+ workshops,Dynamic Daily Liturgies,Saturday Evening
Healing Service, Young Family Ministry, Children’s Program,Teen
Conference(including Teen Concert), Young Adult Conference,
School of Healing Prayer.
Every month in the L.A. Archdiocese’s Pastoral Regions there is a
Mass & Healing Service or Charismatic Healing Mass. Sometimes
there may be seminars on the Holy Spirit or other topics. Coming
up in April there will be a SCRC Spring Conference, “Growing in
the Likeness of Christ: The friut of the Spirit.”
Any way thats basically what I got for now.
 
The folks I know who are with the CCM generally attend more standard Masses on Sundays while gravitating toward bible studies and group prayer during the week.

Now in the developping world? That is another story.

Not my cup of tea, but I leave it well enough alone. I know of several folks who were very depressed and disinterested in faith altogether before they experienced the CCM. Again, as it is largely confined to small groups these days, it is well off the radar.

It should be remembered that for all the quirks some of us find distasteful in the CCM, there was a period - 2 decades or more - where in some places charismatic circles were the ONLY places you would hear sermons about the Lordship of Christ as opposed to some “Jesus-as-pre-modern-nice-jewish-guy-who-wants-you-to-be-nice-too”.

Maybe that should be considered before anyone decides to pull the “Judgy McJudgerson” routine on them.

Why be so provacative? What good does it accomplish?
 
The papal preacher was here in Southern California a few months ago to celebrate a Charismatic mass.
 
One need only look to “The Choices We Face” – on EWTN or at renewalministries.net – to hear voices from the Renewal. Ralph Martin is an excellent teacher, author and speaker and many of his guests are from the CCM. Whether it’s your cup of tea or not, there is much good that our Lord has accomplished – and is continuing to accomplish – through this movement.🙂

Yes you are right
“we can only hope” that is, that the so called charismatic renewal is not dead (it is not anyhow) because the charismatic part of the heading represents the birth again or,… new coming of the "Holy Spirit"as it did on the earth in the early 1970s.
Look at the bible, Jesus tells us that before the end times come He will send the spirit of God anew, to enflame the people. We called it ( for a want of terms) “the charismatic reunion”.

No person has the right to put down the comming of the Holy Spirit, and NO PESON is able to do works without the Holy Spirit.

The Catholic Charismatic Movement began back in the early 70’s…I joined in '75.

I assure everyone reading on these threads - the CCM has not peaked yet -.

Before the end times God will send the Warning and the permanent Miracle, followed sometime thereafter by the Chastisement. These 3 events will bring not only the CCM but other catholic movements to their peak as well.

As a catholic charismatic myself, I’ve become more of an aspiring contemplative…I’ve been “at it” for about 9 years and still aspiring. 🙂

I encourage and warn my fellow catholic charismatic friends to adhere to the their catholicism and stay away from ecumenism. As a CC you are always in danger of falling into a false sense of ecumenism which lines up more with protestant pentescostalism.

Don’t forget you are Catholic!

Why would anyone wish for an end to the CCM?
While I don’t consider myself to be a part of the movement, I do occaisionally attend Mass at the Catholic Charismatic Center here in Houston. I enjoy when I go for a number of reasons.

First and foremost, the homilies are among the most challenging orthodox Catholic homilies I have heard anywhere in the archdiocese, including attending an occaisional EF Mass. They even occaisionally condemn the use of contraception. How many priests at regular diocesan parishes do this during a homily?

Second, the people there are there to worship God because they love Him and want to give him praise, not just because the Church says they have to be there.

Third, when people see me and my wife with our five children and tell us how blessed we are, I can tell by the looks on their faces that they mean it.

If you do not like the contemporary “praise and worship” music, fine, it’s not my first choice either, (part of the reason this is not my “home parish”) but to condemn this movement and hope for its rapid demise is without merit.

A charism (plural: charismata. From the Greek, charis - grace; the divine influence on the receiver’s heart, and its reflection in his or her life.[1]) is a power, generally of a spiritual nature, believed to be a freely given gift by the grace of God.

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit will never die. Are we open, listening, obedient?
The Charismatic Movement as a movement may have changed since it’s beginnings. Those who placed Prayer Meetings above the Mass and Sacraments missed the point. Those who incorporated the Charismata into a deep Catholic Faith still grace the Church today. Sister Ann Shields, Ralph Martin, and Peter Herbeck come to mind as two who have done this. Take some time to check them out. I listen to them regularly on Catholic Radio. I no longer go to prayer meetings. I sometimes miss the praise and worship; however I love meeting Jesus at every Mass. I pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit daily and I am never disappointed.
Jesus prayed that we all may be one in Him. Please don’t let prayer styles separate us. Be open to the Holy Spirit and Obedient to Christ in His Church.

Amen bro, being faithful to the church is the real key.

And the charismatic renewal is very faithful.

Things have changed as the renewal has matured and these days we are seeing all the gifts of the Holy Spirit becoming more fuitful, due to faithfulness to the Pope and Bishops.

Yes I agree I also have become more in line with the “contemplative” way of allowing the “spirit” of God lead.
I used to gto nilly nally using many miracals stopping the rain, stopping the wind, a person’s legg made the same length as the other, but it was done any time there was no control. In the contemplative move there is stedfast control by the Holy Spirit, although I did use the gift yesterday when the wind blew against my work so I told it to turn the other way and it did. Remember that this was done in the “name of Jesus” it could not have happened otherwise.
The Holy Spirit is definitly leading in the Catholic churches.

VATICAN CITY, MAY 4, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI is encouraging and praising the work of the Charismatic Renewal in its commitment to promote communion. The Pope affirmed this in a letter sent through his secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, to the members of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (Rinnovamento nello Spirito). The movement members are gathered near Rimini, Italy, for their 31st meeting. The annual celebration began Thursday and is focusing on the theme “Regenerated by the Word of God” (1 Peter 1:23).

More than 20,000 people are participating in the meeting. In Italy alone, the Charismatic Renewal has more than 200,000 members, among 1,900 groups and communities.

The papal letter stated that “His Holiness praises and encourages the commitment with which the Charismatic Renewal makes its own and carries forward the effort to promote communion and collaboration among the diverse realities that the same Spirit has brought about in the Church.”

The letter emphasized that the Holy Father “always follows the journey of the ecclesial movements with special pastoral solicitude” and that he exhorts the members of the Charismatic Renewal always to “unite with prayer their effective attention to the world’s needs and the good of men.”

It would appear that the movement is not ‘dead’ … not even close, judging by the Italian members alone.
