Is the Catholic Church moving toward the women deaconate?

In the June 20th issue of The Catholic Messenger of the Davenport diocese, the editor’s column focused on the deaconate, specifically as to whether it is time to ordain women to the deaconate, since they are performing many of the service functions of this ministry already. Frank Wessling points to some canon law posturing by Emeritus Pope Benedict that Frank cites as inching the door open to female deacons. He quotes an October 2009 addition to canon law that states, “Those who are constituted in order of the episcopate or the presbyterate receive the mission and capacity to act in the person of Christ the Head, whereas deacons are empowered to serve the people of God in the ministries of the liturgy, the word, and charity.” He sees the clarifying of the distinctions between priests and deacons in this statement as suggesting that the Church is posturing itself to let female deacons in the door. He ends by suggesting that the time may be ripe to end this discrimination.
