Do you know the other reasons?
I started a tread not along ago on the topic (“Why have people hated Jews?”), but I want more answers. If you don’t know, or can’t be bothered, that’s fine.
Is the Catholic Church the most misrepresented organisation of all time?

For me, this exchange has helped me realize how easy it is to misrepresent each other.

One of the most common reasons was pure ignorance. Typically, the best way to rally a people to a cause is to find someone to blame the ills of society on. In Northern and Eastern Europe, the Jewish community was very isolationist. When crops failed, or a disease hit, or the economy was bad, blame those Jews that live over there apart from us. See how they are not like us. They Killed Jesus and so on. Hitler was a master of this. The first group he hit was the Communists, then he blamed the economic problems on the Jews. Now, there are also other reasons. In some places (very few) the banking industry was dominated by Jewish people. There are lots of reasons for that, too many to discuss here. Anyway, if you needed money, you had to deal with these families. If you were denied money, or had to deal with foreclosure, etc, you typically saw it as a Jewish vs Non-Jew issue. Again, it was more ignorance than fact.

So, would you say that they have a reputation of being rich (and powerful in business?) And they are also known for sticking together sort of thing.
Are these probably the two main reasons for the racism? What was the ignorance over? their image? myths about them? or what?

I could be wrong, but I don’t think people have bothered Jews over their religion (Judaism). More on the people themselves. I don’t think that many people talk about their religion, as much as people talk about Catholicism. my two cents.

I thought this thread was about organizations, and not religious doctrines.
With the former, the Jews win. With the latter, the Catholics win. Right?

Those are two of the stereotypes. Not all stereotypes are bad. But, all of them are unfair. There is that image of the powerful business man or banker being Jewish. Personally, I have known Jewish families that were on welfair. The best way to avoid being labled as an anti-somthing is to avoid seeing stereotypes as reality.
There are millions of answers to this one. The fact that the communities were isolated helped myths grow about them. Lies were easy to spread. People hate the different and fear the unknown. As someone else posted, it was not about what they believed but about what those that hated them believed. Each stereotype drove another wedge into the relationships between us.

The Jews may have been the most misrepresented in the past, but since the holocaust, no one seems to dare to say anything against them (not that anyone should or anything).
The Catholic Church however is fair game, especially since Vat II because the Church is in turmoil at the moment.
Did y’all know that about 50 million Catholics are known to have been martyred in the USSR? About 6 million Jews and 3 million Catholics died because of the Nazis.
I don’t know about you all, but it seems to me that 50 million is much bigger than 6 million. Maybe we Catholics should try to go around and get the sympathy vote that so many other groups have gotten? But we just aren’t that way, most Europeans just aren’t that way, so we remain the easy target.
I don’t really care too much unless, they are spreading fallacies that drive people from the Church. Then I become really

Yes, there have been bad parts of the Catholic Church’s past, the inquisition, the crusades, etc… but we have also had our fair share of persecution too in England, the USSR, the USA, the Middle East, etc… And we are continually persecuted even within our own Church. Those of us who are conservative are constantly put down by the liberals, and in turn we conservatives try to fight the liberals every step of the way, and since Pope Benedict has been pope, we conservatives are gaining ground, slowly but surely.
The outside world looks at the recent scandals and points figures, but recent studies show that an equal percentage of scandal goes on in every church, it is just that the Catholic Church is an easy target.

Btw, what is the “turmoil” that the Church is going through? And why is it being treated as fair game?.. abuse scandals? or what do you mean?

The turmoil is the Vat II.
At least in the USA, every mass is different, priests, and lay people alike don’t know what is right and wrong. Many if not most Catholics in the USA know very little about their faith, and even less care to follow the rules of the Church. The faith in the priesthood is broken, hopefully not beyond repair. There are so few priests, bishops are starting to panic when looking forward even ten years. Young people are being raised without any religion and so they fall away from the Church. Those who are loyal to the Church are persecuted by everyone else even in just small ways. The list can go on and on and on, but I think you get the point and if not please tell me, sometimes, I am not clear though I think I am :hypno:
The Church is specifically targeted by people because we are pretty much the only church in the world with a central authority. So it is easy for everyone to target us because they can easily identify us and easily tell what we believe. Other religions have less specific, or ever changing policies and beliefs, but the Catholic faith stays basically the same. Also, the Catholic Church has so many rules, that it is easy for someone to say something and no one will bother to look up because the catechism is so thick.
This is what I mean, I hope I was clear, if not please tell me again. I have the bad habit of thinking I am clear when I am not.
And do have a WONDER FULL day!
