Exactly where did Jesus define what he intended women to be? How they were to dress etc?

Frankly, I don’t like veils. Maybe its just me, but veiling women carries a lot of bad connotations for me. That said, if individuals feel called to it, or believe it helps their faith and reverance, then good on them. (There are two or maybe three who wear the veil at my parish.)

I have a desire to show reverence and respect to our Lord by wearing a head covering/veil but feel if I did at my church, I would be drawing attention to myself and that’s not what I want. I have attented a Latin Mass (out of town) where the majority of women wore veils. I would really like to see this traditional practice ressurected seeing it is based on sacred scripture.
I have had similar thoughts a desire to wear one but a nervousness that I would stand out and bring attention to myself.

We recently moved and are now in a new parish diocese were there is no opportunity to kneel or sit after holy communion, and yet I kneel at every mass I attend. I don’t care if people notice my whole body and soul needs to kneel. I never felt anything close to that when thinking about a veil so for now I don’t think a veil is right for me, I do though think that women can feel this way about the veil and they should wear one.

Hey Cat!
Basically- when one veils, it is a testament to the Real Presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.
Possibly I read this wrong? How can a veil make any kind of testament to the Real Presence? The veil does not = the belief.

Is that to say women who do not veil do not have reverence and do not believe in the Eucharist is the Real Presence of Jesus?

Because my parish is filled with devout woman at daily mass and adoration and none are veiled yet I absolutely know they believe this.

I don’t think the veil will make a come back unless the Holy Father mandates it.

On Preparing to Receive Christ Worthily in the Eucharist

• Appropriate attire
We should also come to the sacred liturgy appropriately dressed. As Christians we
should dress in a modest manner, wearing clothes that reflect our reverence for God
and that manifest our respect for the dignity of the liturgy and for one another.

Whether one decides to wear a veil or not, Catholics should follow our bishops and the Vatican in calling us to appropriate, modest dress that reflects our reverence for God and the dignity of our Lord who we are about to receive. There should be a connection between Catholic worship in the Sacrifice of the Mass and how we dress, as the Bishops remind us.

Jesus defined what he intended women to be when he created His mother and made her our mother.

Good post. Thanks

It is hard to explain and a rather long discourse. If anyone cares to hear it, I will be glad to type it out. But I would rather not if people are just going to skim past it.

First Epistle Of Saint Paul To The Corinthians 11: 1- 10
Be ye followers of me, as I also am of Christ. Now I praise you, brethren, that in all things you are mindful of me: and keep my ordinances as I have delivered them to you. But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. Every man praying or prophesying with his head covered, disgraceth his head. But every woman praying or prophesying with her head not covered, disgraceth her head: for it is all one as if she were shaven. For if a woman be not covered, let her be shorn. But if it be a shame to a woman to be shorn or made bald, let her cover her head. The man indeed ought not to cover his head, because he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of the man. For the man is not of the woman, but** the woman of the man**. For the man was not created for the woman, but the woman for the man. Therefore ought the woman to have a power over her head, because of the angels.
Footnote:
10 “A power”… that is, a veil or covering, as a sign that she is under the power of her husband: and this, the apostle adds, because of the angels, who are present in the assemblies of the faithful.
The following is from another conversation I was a part of regarding veiling. If bits confuse you, let me know, and I will be glad to expound.

“For the angels” refers to the fact that the angels never go before God without covering their eyes and themselves with their wings. Because we are going before Jesus, in the form of the consecrated host in the tabernacle, we are to cover our heads, because the angels around us are covering themselves in reverence to Jesus.
When Jesus was on Earth, He was in His human form and not His Godly form. As the consecrated host, He is before us as God the Son. Therefore, it is appropriate to veil your head, as the angels do, in the Presence of God. The angels veil themselves in His presence, regardless of His physical state.
But when He was “wandering around Israel preaching and teaching” people didn’t know who He was, and He left it to those around Him to reveal and profess His nature.
So thus, in veiling ourselves, we are revealing and professing the nature of Jesus as Christ and God the Son.
But that’s just how I think of it.
And, additionally, we are veiling ourselves in response to our belief that the consecrated host IS God the Son before us, physically and spiritually, thus revealing and professing our belief in Transubstantiation.
We are veiling ourselves FOR the angels, beings I fully agree are below as being that we are made in the image of God.
However, being that we are higher beings than angels, we (women) veil ourselves for them, to keep from distracting them.
As I have described it to my daughter “Sometimes a woman does her hair so prettily that an angel would rather look at it, then adore Jesus” Thus, we veil ourselves for their sake.

Here are some lovely links regarding veiling, as well:

We were made to a higher order than the angels. The angels were not made in the image of God. We are different and can, therefore, be a distraction.

Plus, angels have come to earth and procreated with women… so it’s obviously a well established fear (distracting the angels, that is)

Are you contradicting St. Paul?

This is contrary to Catholic teaching. Angels have no bodies and no sperm and can’t procreate with women.

From his book “Three to Get Married” Archbishop Fulton Sheen says: “St. Paul speaks of Christ as the invincible Head of the body and this is because: `The head to which a wife is united is her husband’ (I Cor. II:3). **It is very likely that the Divine Prohibition against women appearing in church with their heads uncovered is related to this idea.” **This carries the "Nihil Obstat John M.A. Fears, STD; Imprimatur: Francis Cardinal Spellman.

How would this apply to single women?

Angels of God can be trusted not to be distracted.

Angel of God,
My gaurdian dear,
Through whom God’s love commits me here,
Ever this day,
Be at my side,
To light and gaurd,
To rule and guide.
Amen.

A single woman’s head is Christ. A married woman’s head is her husband who represents Christ. In both cases the veil represents submission and obedience to Christ’s authority. The first in the single state of life, the second in the married state of life. In a marriage the husband represents Christ and the wife represents the Church as explained by St. Paul. Both are equal in human dignity. Each have different roles.

if it hasn’t been said, veils and dresses are way less distracting and help me focus on Mass better. actually i do spend time admiring them but i’m sure it would wear off if it became the norm.
the effects of tight jeans, tops, skirts, body suits, etc. do not wear off!

You are right. I had a poor translation that indicated that the Sons of God in Genesis 6:4 were angels instead of the descendants of Seth and Enos.
Mea culpa.

Then why do women veil “for the angels”?

Then why do women veil “for the angels”?
I think we don’t really know why we veil for the angels, except the word of God tells us so. It’s a mystery we will eventually understand. I would guess it is because they understand the incredible sacredness of God and they understand God’s will for us.

So true.
I hope my question did not come off as argumentative. I was truly curious.
