Is the Chaplet of Divine Mercy for the dying or the dead or both?

I will be attending my friend’s mom’s funeral this Sunday. I planned to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy but I am not sure whether it is for the dying or the dead. If it is only for the dying then I won’t pray it.

You may pray it for whomever you’d like. I have prayed it for the dying and the dead and for the living and for myself.

There aren’t really a lot of rules on things like this. It’s a private devotion and a personal prayer. The Church really doesn’t legislate a whole lot about how we’re to do things so particularly. It’s left to our discretion.

It is a prayer for the sick, the dying, the dead, the holy souls in purgatory, and for sinners as well.

…and for the living, for thanksgiving, for reparation, and even if it sounds counter-intuitive, for praise as well.
