by Patrick J. Buchanan:
With the House debate on health care at its hottest, the U.S. Catholic bishops issued a stunning ultimatum: Impose an absolute ban on tax funds for abortions, or we call for defeat of the Pelosi bill.
Message received. The Stupak Amendment, named for Bart Stupak of Michigan, was promptly passed, to the delight of pro-life Catholics and the astonished outrage of pro-abortion Democrats.
Our new battling bishops may be surprised to find they have a large cheering section among a heretofore silent and sullen faithful who have been desperate to find a few clerical champions.

I think this whole episode also shows that the Bishops as a group can still wield real power, when and if it wants to. With a united voice, they had the moral authority to help pressure Congress on an issue. Of course they can’t do this on every issue or they run the risk of just being another noisey group with an opinion and stand on everything. But, when it matters, if they do it right, like they did this time, they can influence things for the positive.

Now that he mentions it, it DOES seem like more than a few bishops have recently rediscovered a dusty and forgotten thing called a “steering wheel”… Hooray for leadership and clarity!

Thank the good lord above, my prayers have been answered.

Not church Militant just church unified.

This is comforting. Bishops acting like the spiritual descendants of the Apostles that are. I hope there is more to come.
Me too! The article makes my heart soar… I was worried there were few good Catholics left… what with people in my own youth group blabbering about being pro-abortion and rebuking us for saying that Protestants are wrong. Lukewarm Catholics should either change or take some time off… they harm the faith in more ways than we can even imagine!

I’d say it is.

A recent cartoon in the Notre Dame student newspaper.

http://www.bilerico.com/2010/01/The-Observer-Jan-13-20102.jpg

Character 1: “What’s the easiest way to turn a fruit into a vegetable?”
Character 2: “No idea.”
Character 1: “A baseball bat.”

Attacks against Gays increased 18% last year, to over 300. Vs 7 against Catholics.

Of course, “No True Catholic… etc etc”, despite all appearances to the contrary.

Hiyas:)

IMHO…Bashing…Gays - or anyone - is not what is meant by “Church Militant”.

I hope this helps
