The lay minister, EMHC, is not commissioned to distribute by intinction. If you notice this paragraph from the 2002 GIRM, you will see it specifically states the priest.

Actually, the language parallels that elsewhere:

1. If Communion is given only under the species of bread, the priest raises the host slightly and shows it to each, saying, Corpus Christi (The Body of Christ). The communicant replies, Amen, and receives the Sacrament either on the tongue or, where this is allowed and if the communicant so chooses, in the hand. As soon as the communicant receives the host, he or she consumes it entirely.

You certainly could conclude, based on the lack of clarifying paragraphs after 287, that only the priest is meant there. As you are correctly considering, such an interpretation may mean that deacons are also excluded, without any good reason. But it would not be unreasonable to assume that the word “priest” has the same scope in paragraph 287 as it does in 161.

I think Jegudiel is correct - since the GIRM is not clear, and there is no document from the Vatican, the matter is still open for debate, and the local ordinary has the role of interpreting the text.

And that is exactly the question I presented to the office of worship in my diocese, I do believe we are waiting for clarification from the USCCB committee.

The question of the “presidential” action of the priest come in here, is this a presidential action for the priest to distribute by intinction, or is it not. Presidential meaning reserved to the priest alone as in the Eucharistic Prayer or Doxology.

The priest who is in charge here in my diocese was adamant that it was reserved to the priest only, then I made my argument as you do here, and he said, “well…I’ll get back to you.” It’s been a couple of months now with no word.

There is good argument either way, however, I do not know of any bishop making a statement to allow EMHC to distribute by intinction; I do not know all bishops nor do I know of all their writings so it is possible some have. But I doubt it…JMHO here.

Regardless of the response, it is never okay for the communicant to receive the Host, walk to the Chalice and dip the Host, themselves. Right?

Please tell me that we can’t treat Jesus like he is cookies and milk.

LOL…no cookies and milk…you are correct. We cannot allow the communicant to walk up with the Host and dip and consume. Nor should we take the Host and dip for them. They need to be catechized that this is improper.

If this is something your pastor is allowing or promoting, this can be a sticky situation. Talk with him, then go to your office of worship to see the stance of your bishop. Hopefully without causing more issues than needed, but it must be addressed.

No, our pastor would stop that ASAP. He is a very much say the black, do the red kind of guy. We love him.
