Is the conversion of loved ones a worthwhile intention?

I have a wonderful, beautiful girlfriend. I knew from the beginning that she was not Catholic, but Protestant, and she knew from the beginning that I was and that I was adamant and fervent in my Catholicity and have an unimpeded desire to marry in the Church. But we agreed on many of the social teachings of Christ and the Church (no contraception, the sanctity of life, chastity, etc…), so I thought there might be a chance for a great relationship.

At first, I was admittedly tentative, but she seemed quite open to my Catholicity and had even professed to having read some books she loved by Catholic authors and clergy prior to our meeting. And when I would communicate why Catholics and Protestants differed, and why, she seemed to understand. I took this as a possible sign that she might be right for me, especially as I am a catechumen perse, and we could enter into RCIA together so that she could at least discern through a more formal education.

Lately, however, she says it’s hard to agree with everything the Church practices, especially those sacraments that Protestants have forsaken, and that she doesn’t have confidence that she’ll ever agree with it. She cites her personal relationship with Jesus Christ as being her foremost priority, and doesn’t seem to take it to heart when I tell her that everything the Church does, it does with its eyes toward a direct relationship (what is more direct than the Eucharist?). Instead, I think where she stumbles is in her understanding of “personal”. She seems, as most Protestants seem, to equivocate a personal relationship as an isolated one, by which what an individual believes Christ is telling them takes primacy over the community (hence how many thousands of denominations now, and how many countless “non-denominational” Christians?), and that the community does not achieve union and community in the Catholic sense of a mystical body, but are simply a community of individual neighbors who get along and agree that Jesus and the Holy Spirit are working through the lives of each.

What bolsters these resistances, I think, is that her mother fell away at a young age in favor of a Protestant charismatic church, and transmitted her own misunderstandings of the Church (the common ones that fallen away Catholics seem to hold onto, regarding Confession, Mary, etc…) to her children.

I want to be patient because my girlfriend has been open in the past, but she also recently told me that although she does appreciate learning about it and does think there’s something personally attractive about it, her motivation in going to mass with me has been partly the hope that her openness to my Catholicism would lead to my openness to Protestantism. Which I think is a fatal approach, and which felt slightly underhanded and ulterior in approach.

Please, pray for her and her conversion and her ability to see the truth of the Church, and pray for me, that I may both retain hope for her conversion, and discern whether ultimately this relationship is right for me or not, even if my GF does come into the Church. The gap of understanding seems to be much wider now than I originally perceived.

Praying for your intention and that you are able to discern and follow the will of God in deciding whether to continue in this relationship or seek another partner.

(To answer your question, yes conversion of loved ones is a worthwhile intention, although that is separate from your second intention of discerning whether to continue this relationship even though the girl seems to be expressing a desire to draw you away from the Catholic faith that you yourself wish to follow.)

Praying for guidance from above as you discern whether this relationship is right for you and that your girlfriend may be called home to the Catholic Church.

Mary.

YES

My wife didn’t convert until after 36 years of marriage, very worthwhile IMHO…

Hi MJDorry,

Prayers said for both you and your girlfriend.

Prayers that everything works out for both of you.

May God bless both of you.

Most definitely so. Praying to the Holy Spirit to give your girlfriend guidance & direction to the Catholic Church.

Prayers, of course.

But before you get in too deep, ask yourself the most serious question of all…should you marry this girlfriend, which religion will the children be raised in? And how long will the marriage last if there is disagreement on so basic an issue? Sorry to be the fly in the ointment.

Praying for you both…

Hail Mary,
Full of grace,
The Lord is with Thee.
Blessed art Thou amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
Now and at the hour of death,
Amen

Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women and blessed is the
fruit of your womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners
NOW and at the hour of our death. Amen!

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do thou, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God cast into Hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Never stop praying for conversion. A couple of times I have arranged for people to be received into the RCC as they were nearing death. This was after decades of them intentionally choosing not too.

Just to remain upfront, the decision wasn’t based on my actions, but I was blessed to play a part in their entry!

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world…

Our Father
Hail Mary x10
Glory Be
Fatima
Amen

Lord please hear these prayers for the conversion of loved ones. Thank You Lord

My Lord Jesus, lead all souls to heaven,
especially those most in need of thy mercy.
Our Father…Hail Mary x10
Glory Be…Fatima Prayer…Amen!

**O Little St. Agnes, so young and yet made so strong and wise by the power of God, protect by your prayers all the young people of every place whose goodness and purity are threatened by the evils and impurities of this world.

Give them strength in temptation and a true repentance when they fail. Help them to find true Christian friends to accompany them in following the Lamb of God and finding safe pastures in His Church and in her holy sacraments.

May you lead us to the wedding banquet of heaven to rejoice with you and all the holy virgin martyrs in Christ who lives and reigns forever and ever.

Amen.
