Is the devil's number 666 or 616?

I heard somewhere that they misinterpreted the devil’s number and it is actually 616. It sounds like some Protestants are saying it, but I’m not really sure and I don’t know anything about the subject.

Which number is it?
 
To the Greek!!!

The number in the Greek is χξς. That is 600, 60 and 6. Easy cheesy. Very straight forward and easy verse to translate.

The “Mark of the Beast” is in reference to the number 666.

Here are references to it in the Book of Revelations from the Bible:

Revelation 13:15-18; 14:9, 11; 15:2; 16:2; 19:20; and 20:4.
 
I don’t know the whole story but I think the “616” thing was a misprint by some monks who had a mistaken idea about the identity of the “beast.” Maybe someone who knows more about that can chime in.

But the correct translation is “666.” I’ve heard that it most likely referred to emperor Nero of the 1st century.
 
I always heard 666 growing up. I believe the 616 came from some recently found manuscripts that have 616 instead of 666, but I may be mistaken. Either way, if someone wants to stamp a number on your hand or forehead; just say no.

I think the devil’s number is confirmed as 666 by the wise post quoting the greek and others. However, I have never tried to ring him myself.😃

St. Irenaeus wrote about the Mark of the Beast, saying that some scribes had written the number as 616 instead of 666.

He speculated that it was an innocent mistake, based on the way the Greek letters could be easily mixed up, but it is also possible that the error was introduced by people who honestly believed that 616 better equalled “Nero” than 666 (which actually amounts to (“Neron”). He asserted that 666 was the “true” or authentic number. Modern scholars who champion the Nero theory (Pagels, Bauckham, Blount, Barr) have at times implied or directly suggested that 616 is the “true” number, because that fits best with their interpretation of Revelation as a book which predicts the destruction of the Roman Empire.

Interesting fact: 666 is the exact number of golden talents that King Solomon, the wisest king in the Bible, brought into his treasury on an annual basis.

All, please lets ask questions and have a discussion based on what the Bible actually says. The Bible does not say that 666 is the Devil’s number.

The Book of Revelation describes a red dragon and tells us that this dragon is Satan or the devil. The red dragon is not associated with the number 666.

The number 666 is however, associated with the first beast. There are two beasts in the Book of Revelation; the first with seven heads and ten horns and the second with one head and two horns. The second beast actually creates an image of the first beast and causes the image to breathe and speak.

The number 666 is not associated with the second beast or the dragon/satan, but with the first beast. This is how all kinds of wild theories and incorrect teachings get passed around as truth, because hardly anyone bothers to read the text.
