Ouch. Somebody’s upset that it’s an “American” Bible?

Well, excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me.

Just kidding. I do agree that the word “American” is out of place in the title of that Bible. Come to think of it, the word “New” is silly, too, because it isn’t ‘new’ anymore, for that matter. I think it should be renamed “That Bible” or “Their Bible” so it won’t be confused with “The Bible.”

But, anyway, you’re right, the text doesn’t sparkle like many of the others. My favorite study bible is the NIV Study Bible, which has copious notes and maps, etc. The translation is a paraphrase, like the NAB supposedly is.

I** was just reading over Gen 12 for my personal devotion. I notice that the NAB translates a word in the opening blessing as “communities”. The NIV translates the blessing with the word “nations”. and The RSV-CE uses the word “families.”
Young’s Literal Translation and the KJV-R uses the word “families.”**

I don’t know that I or anybody else is going to give a definitive answer on the “best” translation.
