How about this angle of ‘essential’:
After Jesus makes his statements about being the Bread of Life, including what folks will be ‘doing’ with that Bread - - -
John 6 - “66 As a result of this, many [of] his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.”
Ok, so folks walked. What if ALL the folks walked?
We know Peter sets the table for the last supper with his answer. (An answer that needs a thread on it’s own).
To analyze ‘essential’, it would be good to consider ‘everyone walking away’?
What does Jesus do then?
I see this conversation…
Jesus: Father, you know that whole bread thing we took from our brainstorming session?
Father: Yes Son, bread seems accessible to all and a foundational food, I’m glad they figured it out.
Jesus: Well, I just showed them how I can be flexible with food, bread specifically, in serving a few thousand folks with a few loaves. But when I told them I would feed them life as you and I talked about, they all walked away.
Father: Did you tell them how you would accomplish your goal?
Jesus: I was saving it for Passover.
Father: Ah, good idea, need to link it to your sacrifice anyway, will be nice timing to start a New Covenant.
Jesus: I have to complete the process.
Father: Yes Son, the truth in what You say doesn’t change because nobody believes.
Jesus: Can we talk about that sacrifice thing?
Father: Later Son, in a garden.
