Is the Fatima Prayer an American Phenomenon

Since the rosary is now and has always been a private devotion (even if said communally) it is not surprising that it has “grown” over the years to include additional prayers and most people don’t even know that anything has changed.

I have attended the recitation of the Rosary before Mass in my parish, and I don’t understand most of the prayers they say. THEY obviously know what they are saying, but nobody who is not part of the in-crowd could ever make it out, it’s even hard to make out the Hail Marys and the Lord’s Prayer.

I mean praying the Fatima Prayer after each decade of the rosary. Well, is it? For instance, on a CD of Pray the Rosary with the Holy Father Pope Venerable John Paul II, who was no small supporter of Our Lady of Fatima, the Fatima Prayer is not employed. So, is it just an American Phenomenon?

Fatima Prayer: O my Jesus, forgive us our sins and save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls into heaven, especially those most in need of thy mercy.

Either you choose to pray it or you don’t. It’s optional. No rubric or iron rule.

I love this prayer and pray it not only after each “Glory Be” but also several times during the day as an aspiration, and also right after the elevation of the chalice during Mass.

I have right next to me a small booklet (in Italian) from the Jubilee Year of 2000 in Rome where the Rosary was prayed with Pope John Paul II. It has the Fatima Prayer but the Rosary is started like this:

V. O God, come to my assistance.
R. Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be…
Fatima Prayer…

All of the Fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary were prayed and it concluced with the Hail Holy Queen and the Litany of Loreto.
