I got into a dialogue with a Seven Day Adventist, who was arguing for the biblical accuracy of soul sleep, stating:
“Jesus said when he was appearing after his death that he had not yet ascended to the father. This means that many days after his crucifixion, he had not yet gone up. He rested in the grave on the sabbath, was resurrected the following day, and then appeared to many before ascending into heaven. How could the thief be with him in paradise if Christ wasn’t there?
Verily I say unto you, today, you shall be with me in paradise.
There’s no way to reconcile the concept of immediate departure to heaven or hell with the concept of a resurrection of the dead if the dead are already in heaven or hell. It just doesn’t make sense. Read Job 14:12, John 3:13, Psalm 146:4, Daniel 12:2, John 5:28-29…
In Acts 2:29,34, we find that David is not in heaven, but in the grave. If David, someone we think is surely going to be saved, is not in heaven… what makes us think anyone else is? The text talks about how Christ’s soul was not left in the grave… meaning that Christ’s soul, when he died, went into the grave! (translated as hell)
The Bible defines a soul as body plus breath or spirit. (Genesis 2:7) We do not have a soul that keeps living, and we cannot exist without the combination of both together at the same time. Otherwise, if we have no body, the spirit is with God and we are not; like it was before our birth when the spirit in us was with God.”
I was just curious as to if soul sleep is biblical?
