Is the "Jesus of the Bible God?"

Sometimes Jesus’ statement that he is God is not so much that he says so, examples of which have been listed above, but in the fact that other people say so. The example of the people who wanted to kill him for declaring himself God is a great one. But there are other examples also.

In praying the Nicene Creed we declare of the Holy Spirit that he is “adored and glorified” with the Father and the Son. The word “adore” means to worship God. There are many instances in the New Testament where people adore Jesus.

Mt 2:11, 8:2, 9:18, 14:33, 15:25, 28:9, 28:17
Mk 5:6, 15:19
Jn 9:38, and in 4:20 a woman uses the word for worship on the mountain

(The word adore is used in these verses in the Douai-Rheims.)

The point is that when people do or say certain things they are actually expressing that Jesus is God. When someone falls down in adoration, they are worshiping him as God. And Jesus does not stop them. Sometimes people say certain things, like Thomas Didymus did, which declare that Jesus is God, and in this case Jesus calls those who have not seen and yet have believed that he is God “blessed.”

If the translation of the Bible someone is using is any good at all, then the Scriptures point to Jesus being God. As has been stated above, Jesus actually says it if you understand what you’re reading. But even so, it’s clear that people worship him and he allows them. If he were not God, then he would be encouraging them to worship a false god and break the first commandment.
