Is the Law of Attraction a trap?

Here is the main question:
Does our subconscious ego prevent us from practicing and learning about the Law of Attraction?

Here is the back story to my question now:

I went through a rough stretch recently and my older brother who is a doctor suggested I read a book called ‘A Bug Free Life’ by Andy Shaw.

I glanced bullet points of the book and realized that Mr. Shaw here is preaching ‘The Law of Attraction’. I understand the Catholic Church isn’t too fond of LoA. So I didn’t read the book.

The other day, he asked me if I read it yet. I said no, I forgot (didn’t really want to get in a religious debate with him).

He was telling me, and I guess this is the general teaching of LoA as well, that our ego will subconsciously try to find ways to cause us not to hear ‘the message’ and put it to practice. He believes my ego is trying to ignore reading the book, and even said my ego would try to convince me that God didn’t want me to read it.

I was kind of taken back by this and realized how much of a mental trap this could be.

Law of Attraction is new age gobbeldy gook. Not worth your time.

I agree, but is there any scientific, psychological, philosophical, theological evidence suggesting that we have a subconscious ego that prevents us from pursuing this stuff?

Because I’m going to assume LoA apologists will use this if there is an argument or warning against it. "Oh, that’s just your ego talking"

Science only applies to the natural world.

It is rather difficult to disprove any immaterial thing.

Ask your brother to prove there IS such thing. Burden of proof lies on the claimant.

If anything would it not be the opposite?
I mean, would not your ego WANT to think the Universe bends to YOUR will to give YOU what YOU want?

Unfortunately that’s not the typical line of reasoning when you deal with people who buy this stuff. It’s a very gnostic set of beliefs, mixed with just enough psychology and science to sound convincing. But it doesn’t hold up under scrutiny or, more importantly, in actual practice. It is a mental trap because any thing that doesn’t “fit” the schema is a trick of the ego. It’s a lot of circular reasoning and self-confirming bias.

In one post for this thread it was written that the law of attraction is "new age gobbeldy gook" and in another post it was written that the "Burden of proof lies on the claimant." Please offer proof that the law of attraction is gobbeldy gook. I will offer that the law of attraction is fact and a part of all religions in which prayers are answered and which the adherents claim "miraculous" healings. These two reasons alone are enough for me to believe the law of attraction is fact.
Having written that I'd like to share these two quotes:
"There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn't true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true." -Soren Kierkegaard-

"Do not belittle any religion or give predominance to any single religion." -Sathya Sai-

Because I’m going to assume LoA apologists will use this if there is an argument or warning against it. “Oh, that’s just your ego talking”
They’re not the only ones who do that.
“Here’s my theory/religion/anti-religion/thing I want you to do/favorite gimmick. Oh, you don’t accept it. That must be because you’re (bad reason for not accepting it).”

Code:
"Oh, that's just your ego talking." :) very well could be.
"Not even if the single religion is true?" My dilemma with that is that I believe there are many paths to the one truth. Again could be my ego talking.

The Law of Attraction is a death trap. I went through a period where I believed in it totally and even watched the documentary on it multiple times. It left me feeling hopeless and helpless.

The LoA feeds on our sinful desires and encourages materialism. Celebrities promote it all the time. It really is sad.

Probably anything we become addicted to can be a "death trap". I read quite a few posts here on caf over the years that folks have described how hopeless, and helpless they feel. They mention how they feel deserted by god because they believe their prayers for health, wealth, happiness, etc... haven't been answered.
I can relate though that I've never once read a post that referred to Catholicism, or any other form of Christianity as a death trap. In all honesty I haven't read that about any other religion by a current practitioner of that particular faith either.
I do believe the law of attraction is real but I'm not a fanatic about it.

I don’t know how you are posting, but, it is impossible to read. The first few words show up in each line.

I assume it is my post you're referring to. I don't know what I've done for the posts to come up this way so I'm not sure how to change it either. I would say the posts this way take more effort to read but certainly not impossible. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I wasn’t “addicted” to it. The main objective of the Law of Attraction is materialism. Greed. Selfishness. It has no regard for other people at all. It’s a death trap in the sense that there’s no good in it. No virtue.

I don’t know much about it, but you people are really killing my motivation to learn more about it. Thanks alot. 😡

j.k.

It sounds silly. From what the OP states about it, I think I’d prefer to go read the telephone book. Do they still have those?
