Is the New Mass just a gig?

A bit amusing and disturbing all at once.

Yet, don’t be annoyed. Remember that the Catholics there in England have been strangers in a strange land for years. I see the little guide as opportunity for those curious to see a Mass and realize that the “gig” really is more than just an “event.”

Even if only 1 person is converted to Catholicism from this otherwise-wayward and overly simplistic document (or, better, the Pope’s visit itself), we as Catholics should rejoice.

That it is quite pathetic! They treat people like ignorant dolts. 😦
That is probably because most people are ignorant, or at least somewhat. Do you really think the masses of peasants and proles care about debasing these holy places with such silly analogies to secular life? I’m sure most of them have a laugh at it, then go down to the local public house and forget very rapidly that they’d even opened the pamphlet at all. It is precisely the fact of doltiness that we’re in the situation we’re in with faith today! Dawkins and Hitchens feed on ignorant doltery, as it were. 😛

This is a very depressing result of the spirit which Paul VI identified as corrupt and regrettable. 😦

Of course, this should not distract from the fact that many Ordinary Form parishes have respectful glorification of God going on. My own O.F. cathedral here sings the Ordinary in Latin, except for the Gloria and Credo, on Sundays. The love for the eucharist is very strong, and there are no analogies between stage and sanctuary. It is all ad maiorem Dei gloriam! We simply have to see just what can be achieved when the ignorant pub-crawling recidivists are eliminated from the congregation.

The pamphlet comes from the Bishops. Bishops are the teaching authority and have an obligation to do so in a proper manner. That it is independent on who is on the receiving line. You sound like a snob when you talk of the “masses of peasants and their proles” as a bunch of ignorant dolts. Usually those have been the strongest Catholics and probably their proles are a reflection of it, on the contrary the pseudo-intellectuals are the ones that go after people like Dawkins and Hitchens not out of ignorance or because they are imbeciles but because of arrogance in trying to be better than the Church.

I would also like to know how your Cathedral and the celebration of the Liturgy in it has any correlation with the topic.

A Congregation is not an “Audience” or a “Crowd”. A Congregation is a gathering of the faithful for a religious purpose, function or event.

Liturgy/Benediction/Mass/Celebration is not a “Gig” or a “Show” - although it is an “Event”; however to describe it as an “Event” alone is as meaningless as anything from murder to crucifixion to me eating crisps were “Events” - it is thoroughly meaningless. Liturgy/Benediction/Mass/Celebration should be described as religious practices and events celebrated by Catholic Faithful and the Clergy.

Pilgrim Pass is not a “Ticket” - it is a pass which allows access to the events; which regrettably have to be used to avoid danger; sabotage and to secure safety for the participants.

Spiritual/Uplifting - is not just “enjoyable, fun, exiting” – it is instead a Process where Catholic Faithful feel that they are having a religious experience or interaction with God.

Blessed Sacrament/Holy Communion - is not just “bread and wine” it is Reliving the Crucifixion and Last Supper with Christ; through Bread and Wine.

Distribution was reasonably described as “Serving, Giving out”…

Pope/Holy Father/Bishops/Priest/Concelebrants are not “Headline acts” they are the Catholic Clergy and Ministers who are presiding over the various religious events.

Altar is not just a “Table”. It is the table which we use for the sacrifice of Mass; where we relive the last supper, and the crucifixion.

Liturgists are not “performers or artists”… They are individuals who are involved in celebrating the Catholic practices in various religious ceremonies.

Sanctuary is not a “stage”; it is the area around the Altar; where Liturgists can celebrate the various Catholic practices.

Sacristy is not “backstage”; it is the place where Religious objects and clothes are kept.

So the Bishops and priests in England who came up with this document are raging idiots. Let’s hope these Bishops and priests are up for retirement even early retirement if possible.

I hope everyone here on this forum is praying that the hearts of all people in the United Kingdom, will be open to receiving the Holy Father’s message. That they will know and experience the love of God, in turn bringing them to repentance. And that their hearts will be converted back to the Lord.

That a new dawn will rise in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, that they will be set on fire with a zeal and love of the true faith.

Well…that is what I have been praying for.

I do apologise, but I don’t have much hope for the modern world and its worship of “the people” (spreading Democracy about, and such) everywhere you look. My snobbishness is real, it’s true, but I should never try to hide it. Sometimes it gets the better of me, but I try to avoid that. 🙂

Mentioning my own cathedral and liturgy were meant to serve the point that not every “New Mass” is as silly as this pamphlet makes it out to be. The topic is “Is the New Mass just a gig?”, so I provided an example in the negative.

Thanks! Now I understand what you meant.

Gigs are cool, hippie cumbaya music makes you a laughing stock. So, no, it isn’t a gig.

Hmmm…I was half expecting to see “appropriate attire” – “shorts and flip-flops”.

I’ve seen this reprinted on a couple of the usual blogs, and I really have to ask: don’t the column headings indicate what’s really going on here? They’re not trying to suggest additional or replacement terms for “Congregation,” “Altar,” etc., they’re trying to emphasize which terms are the “Terms for Catholic events” and which are “Similar Terms” used in other contexts. Maybe this would be clearer if order of the two columns were reversed. But I don’t know how anyone could conceivably read this and think that what’s being suggested is that we call the Pope, bishops, and priests the “Headline Act”, versus trying to emphasize that the “term for Catholic events” is Pope, etc., “(or collectively ‘Concelebrants’)”, and not “Headline Act.”

People need to (1) read this chart the way it was obviously intended, as shown by the chart’s headings themselves, rather than reading it in the exact opposite sense of what was intended, and (2) grow a sense of humor.

what exactly was the tip off for you that the author of this pamphlet intended it to be humorous?

Mark,

You are so off track on this. But then again you tend to rationalize a lot of things. If you cannot figure out the problem with this well that is where you are. Humor was NOT the intent. “Helping” non-Catholics (ecumenism) was the idea and it was a terrible idea. But I could argue valid truths until I was blue in the face but you probably would still not agree…

Having a sense of humor, I guess. It’s just a mildly tongue-in-cheek effort to remind people of the difference between “terms for Catholic events” and other terms. The Pope as “Headline Act”, the Sacristy as “backstage”, the Blessed Sacrament as “bread and wine” – lol. For anyone who reads this as a set of recommendations to replace “terms for Catholic events” rather than a reminder of which are the appropriate terms for Catholic events, I’ve got a lovely bridge to sell you. Speaking of, –

Heavens no! The ecumaniacs are running rampant! Was this horror predicted by . . . the real Third Secret of Fatima???

Apparently you believe that because you have a sense if humor that somehow that means that the author of this pamphlet meant for it to be a joke.
