The truth hurts sometimes.(if it isn’t true, could you guys explain?) [SIGN]explain,please[/SIGN]
OK, I take part of what I said back. The part about not intending to be offensive.

I reiterate the part where I said “It’s hard to understand why anyone would believe being offensive would actually strengthen their position.”

Offensiveness is a signal that you have no basis for your position. When anyone chooses to become offensive, they would do well to keep that in mind.

That is for a different thread. And as you have already indicated that you don’t know if it is true or not, please refrain from using the ‘‘the truth hurts’’ to bolster your position, as it just makes you look pompous.

Well, have you been to Rome? That person whom I heard from has.

I know people who have been to Rome too. They said nothing of the sort. But lets not turn this into an arguement of ‘‘I have a friend who saw this and said…’’. Either learn from those who actually know what they are talking about, or do not speak authoritatively on matters you have not got a solid understanding of.

Yes, I heard it from someone who saw it in Rome himself.
Well, I was just in Rome a few months ago, and that is the most outrageous statement ever made. I was blessed by Benedict himself. Whoever told you THAT LIE is obviously not educated about the Catholic faith. He saw NOTHING that even resembled what you have said.

Where in the world do all you non-Catholic’s get your information from?

I’ve been to Rome. I saw the Pope. It was a while ago. But I was there.

I find it offensive for anyone to say “if your religious leader goes around Rome claiming to have jesus in a container…”

I guess since I’ve been to Rome AND I’ve seen the Pope, that means you’re going to take that back, right? 🤷

And His name is Jesus. We honor Him by capitalizing the first letter of His name even when we are busy or in a hurry. 🙂

I have a question. If the pope say we all need to buy a certain kind of cola, do we have to?
It seems kinda silly to equate him with the Lord God Himself.
Jesus is, was, and always will be infallible.
How does the argument the pope is and many popes had committed adultery, were fornicators, murders, etc. Seems to me it’s hard to make the case. The popes are bishops nothing more.
They have no magic powers. They simply give a teaching and an opinion. Nothing more. I love the Cafeteria and I’m not gonna leave it.😃

Infallibility is limited.

Your post indicates to me 2 things:
  1. It appears you didn’t read the entire thread so you do not know the context of the post you are responding to.
  2. It appears you don’t know what papal infallibility means. If you did, you wouldn’t write such things as “If the pope say we all need to buy a certain kind of cola, do we have to?” or “They have no magic powers.” Someone who actually knows what papal infallibility is would know better. 🙂

to whom shall we go?
The Holy Bible. The full Chapters or Books you were quoting from. If you’re really interested, it helps to read a study bible about the entire book. It will open up the passages more fully. The historical subtext of the time, language and translation variances, etc… I also like to find some clarity on a given subject in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. I find that very useful. Hope this helps.

Peace to you,

Steven

That is NOT Papal Infallibility. Of course there have been bad Popes in the past. However from Peter to Benedict XVI heresy and error teaching has never taken place. His teachings are kept in check by the Holy Spirit.

No.

Aside to forum regulars: what is it with this sudden flood of fundamentalist/evangelical/anti-Catholic types into this forum all at once? It has to be because of the Holy Father’s visit. It’s as if all over the US, lightbulbs went on over heads and fundamentalists everywhere thought, “ZOMG! I must put a stop to this rampant, wanton popery!!!11!”

Aside to fundamentalist/evangelical/anti-Catholic types: if you want to debate Catholics and show us the error of our ways, can you at least attempt to be respectful and decently-behaved while you are here?

I will ask you this respectfully: as your signature states, are you seriously praying to a Saint?

I certainly am. Every day.

To you I fly for aid and for instructions, St. Monica, wondrous exemplar of unswerving prayer. I ask your loving assistance in the cause of my husband***, that through your powerful intercession he may obtain the graces for genuine conversion to Christ Our Lord. To you I also humbly appeal, matron of matrons, to ask our Lord to grant me the same spirit of ceaseless prayer He granted to you. All this I ask through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.***

Steven,

Who’s interpretation of the Bible do you follow? After all, the Bible is just words on paper unless you interpret what those words mean. I judge from your reference to study bible notes that you accept the editors of that particular Bible’s interpretation of what it means. Who are they? Where did they get their authority to interpret Scripture?

Every constitution needs a supreme court. We would never have finality of meaning without some way of determining what the Bible actually says. That is where the Catholic Church comes in. Through the Church’s teaching body in cooperation with the Pope, the correct interpretation of what the Bible means has been preserved for 2000 years.

To get back to the point of this thread, it is helpful to look at papal infallibility in the negative. Jesus’ promise that the gates of Hades will never prevail is the promise that He will protect the Church, even from the Pope if necessary. Christ will not allow any of those who have the opportunity to actually and substantively change the Church’s teachings to do so.

I don’t understand why people think the concept of papal infallibility is an attempted power grab by the Pope when it clearly is a burden on him. The first instance of “papal” infallibility in action takes place in Matthew 16. The next “scene” after Jesus names Simon bar Jonah “Rock” and makes him His chief steward is the situation where Jesus predicts what will happen to Him, namely that He will suffer and die. Peter attempts to use his new authority and tries to prevent it. Jesus’ response? “Get behind me Satan!” Jesus did not allow Peter to stand in the way of His mission and He won’t let the Successor to Peter stand in the way now.

This is why we can rely on the Church’s interpretation of Scripture. It is because Jesus will never let Her leaders monkey with the true meaning.

You may be on to something. We certainly have had a surplus of “drive bys” lately. And you are right to ask for respectful and decent behavior. It would be so refreshing to see some Christ-like behavior, would it not? 🤷

Beloved, one question at a time. This thread is about infallibility. I have followed every post (on and off topic). Did I miss the part where you laid out for us what you think papal infallibility IS?

I’m not being ‘difficult.’ In order for us to explain it to YOU, we need to know your starting point. In our experience, a LOT of people who stumble over this teaching are stumbling over a definition of their own making, and not over what the Catholic Church actually teaches.

OK?
