The Pope shares in the infallibility of the Church when he teaches ex-cathedra in either moral or doctrinal matters. What does it mean to teach ex-cathedra? It “literally” means “from the Chair” It means the Pope teaches with the authority of his office as Successor of St. Peter and Vicar of Jesus Christ.I do hope this is the proper sub-forum for this topic. I’m not Roman Catholic, so that’s why I am asking. For every RC I ask this question to, I get a different answer. Thank you all!
It is a mistake to think that everything the Pope utters is “infallible” teaching. It is also a mistake to think that everything the Pope says is morally or religiously binding on Catholics. That does not mean that Catholics are free to be disrespectful to what he says, even when he simply shares an opinion.
