Is the rosary only for simple people?

Hello,
Today in a conversation with a friend of mine who is a jesuit priest I mentioned that I pray the Rosary every day. He told me that the Rosary is OK for “simple people” but that I ought to seek a deeper form of prayer. I asked him what he suggested and he replied “the spiritual exercices of St Ignatius of Loyola”. Is the Holy Rosary really a prayer for “simple people”? I feel confused and slightly hurt because the Rosary has helped me in my spiritual life, but I want to pray in the way that will most effectively lead me to Christ.
Thank you.

Hi,

While the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola have been a great help for many people, St. Ignatius never intended that they take the place of the rosary. He himself prayed the rosary as have many well educated people, including all the recent popes.
