Is the taking of a drug solely for pleasure sinful or not?

I have chronic back pain and have been prescribed the narcotic drug Percoset, by my doctor, for relief as needed.

When taken the drug not only relieves pain but provides one an overall feeling of euphoria. This feeling is fairly intense and most pleasant. The euphoria lasts less than one hour. I usually take 20 mg. two or three times a week when in pain.

Strangely enough, my pain will occassionally disappear for a period of several weeks or perhaps as long as a month. During these periods of no pain I have taken 20 mg of the drug one time per week for the mere pleasure it provides - the wonderful and euphoric feeling.

When under the influence of this drug I am in full use of my faculties (although I would never drive a car in this state) and am able to function normally.

My question then is, is this a venial, mortal, or NO sin at all?

Thank you in advance for you response.

Hi,

I would be very careful about the habit-forming potential of such a drug. This is how so many people get hooked on drugs–even proscribed drugs. Don’t you be one of them. You may be playing with fire. Such misuse of the drug could be sinful. Use if for what it is proscribed for only.
