Greetings of peace my brothers and sisters!
I would like to ask why does the Church call the Mother of God just “Mary” can’t we add a title saint and make her known as St.Mary of Nazareth or St.Mary, the Mother of God? Thank you and may God bless you always!

Yes , the Virgin Mary is a saint .

Many Catholic churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary are called Saint Mary such as one of our neighbouring churches - - - - - - - - -

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Also, I’ve heard people refer to other saints without the title “Saint”.
For instance, if you hear a reference to Peter and Paul, you know they mean St Peter and St Paul.
And people still refer to Mother Theresa and Padre Pio without putting Saint in front of their names.

I think because she’s the highest of all of them, and it’s pretty common knowledge? Hence we don’t really address her as St Mary.

In Spanish, she’s very often referred to as Santa Maria.

There are several St. Mary’s Churches and St. Mary’s Universities around.

In French, we address her as “Saint Mary, Mere a Notre Deux”.

First I thought “Dame” because “Notre Dame” but then “a Notre ----” would be “a Notre Dieu”, “of Our God”?

Runningdude can you clarify?

Strange how you make assumptions. I’ve seen your username on other posts and thought, like most members, you’re American. You may be, indeed, be but I also assumed you lived in the USA but from this post you clearly do not. You are in the same diocese as me.

Yes Our Lady is a Saint. I am sure she is the patron Saint of the USA.

Her title is the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Church does not “just” call her “Mary”.

She is a saint, yes definitely. And you can call her St. Mary.

She is more typically known under her titles, of which there are many:

Mary, Mother of God
Mary, Mother of the Church
The Immaculate Conception
Our Lady of Lourdes
Queen of the Apostles

etc.

I think he was going for Mother of God. Mère de Dieu.

Maybe using speech to text, which always yields crazy things when i do it.

Right after Jesus Christ there are Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist. Then the Apostles, Prophets, Holy Church Fathers, Martyrs, Righteous ones.
But she is given a special veneration than that to other saints. So she is not often called St. Mary like any other saint to set her apart, in a positive way. Mary is usually called Mother of God.
Do you mean like for example in the Angelic Salutation “Rejoice Mary full of grace…”? Why not “Rejoice St. Mary full of grace…”? I don’t know. But as long as we call God “you” not “Your Divine Majesty” I don’t think Mary is angry because we don’t use her title all the time. Same way we say Jesus sometimes and not Jesus Christ all the times.

It has been noted that there are several Churches and other institutions with the name “Saint Mary…”

It seems to be a quirk of English speakers (and possibly those who speak some other languages with which I am not acquainted) that we don’t tend to use the word “Saint” as a title when we address her directly. The Romance languages frequently use the equivalent word for saint. The “Hail Mary” prayer is a good example.

Mary is more than a saint, she is the Mother of God.

"more honorable than the cherubim, and incomparably more glorious than the seraphim . . . "

She is the Queen of Angels and the Queen of Apostles.

The Mother of God is the best title, because it presupposes her fiat to bring forth the Logos, the Word made flesh.

Hello @TomH1 .

I’m Lancashire born and bred .

The church notice-board of St Mary’s is in Oswaldtwistle , a name which amuses many .

I am in Accrington where I’ve lived all my life except for a few years when I was away at college .

In general, churches are named under titles of the BVM. Even though they may be called ‘St Mary’s’ parish (as is my own parish) in reality the actual name of the parish is going to be “Nativity of the BVM” or “Assumption of the BVM” or “St Mary, Star of the Sea” or “Mary, Mother of God”, etc.
