Right after Jesus Christ there are Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist. Then the Apostles, Prophets, Holy Church Fathers, Martyrs, Righteous ones.
Nice post. What about St Joseph? Is he up there after Mary the Mother of God?

There is often a debate about whether the next greatest saint after Mary is St. Joseph or St. John the Baptist.
I personally am Team Joseph. John the Baptist would be perhaps next in line.

There’s a lot of exceptions to the “name must include titles of Mary” rule.
A Google brings up about 5 Catholic parishes named just “St. Mary’s Church” or “St. Mary’s Catholic Church”, or “St. Mary (Geographical City Name)” in the area surrounding my Internet provider.

Not in the East. He is one of the Justs/Righteous. Below her. He is called the Holy and Righteous Joseph and Fiancee of Mother God, since they were never truly married because they did not conceive together, she conceived through the shadowing of the Holy Spirit.

Nor in the West.

The typical listing of Saints follows: Mary, the Mother of God, John the Baptist, then usually the archangels and the other saints.

St. Joseph does, it seem, often get over-looked, or added on as an after-thought, which is a mistake.
Even the new Roman Missals did not list him in the eucharistic prayers - then they did so as a revision.

In the work of salvation history, Mary was most important, then John the Forerunner, etc. That’s why they are listed that way in the Litany of Saints.

PS: Happy feast day to all Josephs tomorrow - may the quiet and humble support of Joseph inspire all of you!

Mary is sometimes referred to as the Queen of All Saints, so she is definitely a Saint!

If you do further research you will find those parishes are under a title of Mary.

My own parish and another “St Mary’s” one town over are both in the phone book, on Google, on their sign out front, and listed on the diocesan website as “St Mary’s”.

However, they are actually Assumption of the BVM and we are actually Nativity of the BVM.

I always use our full, real name and encourage everyone else to do the same (but, yeah, that’s a losing battle). Because we have the same mailing city/state/zip as the other St Mary’s it can be very confusing for people.

I’d say that Mary and the other saints are actually way behind Jesus Christ and not comparable at all. But Mary is afforded hyperdulia, a higher form of veneration than is given to the other saints

I really love that with all the honor we give her and all the titles, we are still allowed the familiarity of calling her our mother.

Jesus was so good to give her to us as our mother. I feel much better having her for my mother and Joseph as my adopted father now my real parents are dead.

Mine are gone, too, and even being in my fifties I could still feel like a bit of an orphan but for this.

Yes, because every human in heaven is a Saint.

Hello @TomH1 .

I’m Lancashire born and bred .

The church notice-board of St Mary’s is in Oswaldtwistle , a name which amuses many .

I am in Accrington where I’ve lived all my life except for a few years when I was away at college .
Hello @Rob2.

I’m also Lancashire born and bred although the powers that be would put me in Greater Manchester, although that had not been invented before I was born.

I know the church was in Oswaldtwistle, which doesn’t seem a strange name to me. That’s how I knew we were in the same diocese. I saw the picture you posted and thought that’s a UK phone number and I’m sure I know that dialling code. It was only when I looked up the parish I found you were in the Diocese of Salford. At first I suspected you may be in Lancaster Diocese.

I’m an Oldham lad by birth and that’s where I was brought up. Went away for university and then worked in Wales for a bit. I now live in my wife’s home town of Bury.

Accrington the home town of singer/lyricist Jon Anderson of Yes. One of my favorites. I doubt he’s Catholic but he’s spiritual in his own way.

Oldham and Bury , you couldn’t get more Lancashire than that .

When my dad joined the army at the beginning of WW2 he was billeted in the top floor of a factory in Oldham before they were sorted .

They actually has POWs working in factories in Oldham during WW2. My dad got his call up papers and had to report to Wick right at the top of Scotland.

I’ve heard of Jon Anderson , but that’s about all .

I have a friend who was a drummer in local pop groups in the 60s and 70s who was connected with him .
