Is the world more advanced and cohesive as a result of the wars fought over the years?

I have a hard time believing all that one world government poop… Yes I said poop…
Agreed.

I’m of the camp that the world is just going to keep on dividing itself in some places (e.g. Middle East/Asia/Russia/Europe) and uniting itself in other places (e.g. South America/Nordic Countries); like it always has.

😛

I think we are headed toward a world govt. It is inevitable with the advances in technology. With mass communication and mass transport the world shrunk in size. The world wars motivated it as well. No one wants a wwIII so a world govt sounds good.
Naw… We will only do the one world Gov’t. thang if if Jimmy Carter’s UFO invades…

There will never be a one world government as long as God has anything to say. Remember the whole Tower of Babel?

Throughout history the world has come close but fallen short of a World Government. The British, Roman, Hellenic, Spanish and Mongolian empires never stood long enough nor took over the world.

Right now I think we are witnessing an implosion of the global model as Europe collapses and China begins it’s internal catastrophe…we will see far less of the UN because even now it is increasingly becoming more and more irrelevant.
I agree. 👍

History teaches us that a “One World Government” is not a workable concept. People and groups may come close, only to find that Providence may have other plans for them.

The British Empire is a particularly good example. At one point, it was said that the sun never set on it; but look at England now. Sure, they have the “Commonwealth”, but they’re facing a major moral and social decline in addition to having lost their temporal power. (Not that some of us in their former holdings don’t miss them, considering what we got in exchange, but that’s another topic…:D)

Technology is a communication tool, but it may not be a “unifying” tool, except in bringing those with similar interests together, and accentuating the differences between groups that already couldn’t stand each other. If you need proof, go to Facebook, or any other social networking site (Orkut is a million times worse) and look at the number of extremist groups and communities of all stripes, all hating their fellow men, and convinced that they alone are right. (I will refrain from giving examples, as they could be occasions of sin.)

And even in terms of geopolitics, there’s no drive towards unification. The UN is a sad, dysfunctional joke of an organization (something Tolstoy predicted more than a hundred years ago.) Communism in China will fail as it did in the USSR, even if it takes a little longer. What Samuel Huntingdon called “the Clash of Civilizations” will continue to occur. “Traditional”, non-Western religions - most notably Islam, but also Hinduism - will close ranks, forming tenuous alliances only when this in their interests. And amidst this all, what some historians call la revanche de Dieu - a resurgence of religious beliefs and ideals - is also taking place.

Do such things point to an end? They must, if we believe that Divine Providence is the prime mover in our affairs. But to conclude from this that a One World Government (or even the end) is near is a flight of fancy rather than a leap of faith. The wheels are turning, but they will stop only when God decrees it; not when a secular or Protestant “prophet” says they will.

After economic collapse in Europe and America, I see a strong move toward a worldwide economy in the Western World. The Vatican will play a strong role, with its members covering the globe. Stronger morals and higher humanitarian values will be in order. People will vote with their conscience, and not with their pocketbook. Socialism will continue to grow in Europe and begin to overtake capitalism worldwide. People’s welfare will become the dominating value.

Also, I might add, that a belief in an afterlife will begin to grow and bring about economic and social change worldwide. This one belief, more than anything else, will come to dictate politics and human values. This is a most powerful belief that will shatter minds! It will act as a great motivator to work and live devout lives. This thought will lead the revolution! Politics and psychology will never be the same! The salvation of one’s soul, and the souls of others, will become a driving force in the world. Spiritual rewards will overtake sex and money as human motivators.

From a scriptural viewpoint, we are told that “the nations” are a thing that will last unto eternity, even after God has come to earth and established the New Jerusalem here.

“In the midst of the street thereof, and on both sides of the river, was the tree of life, bearing twelve fruits, yielding its fruits every month: the leaves of the tree for the healing of the nations.” Revelation 22:2

I have always found pleasure and interest in the diverse nations and societies of humanity, large and small, and the unique history of each. I wouldn’t WANT to see them disappear into some metaphorical “melting pot,” with all subordinated to a grey, bland uniformity after that. I think this is an implicit context in Rev 22:2.

Nations as human entities, and national sovereignty are not the same thing.

There can be one without the other. There are sovereign national states that are not nations in the ethnic sense (e.g. USA) and there are nationalities that do not have sovereignty (the Kurds, the Indians of Mexico, Judaism prior to 1948).

So even if national sovereignty were somehow done away with, “the nations” would remain.

That’s a lovely vision, especially your last sentence. And I do wish it comes true, and spreads to the East as well. 👍

But it’s not going to happen without a struggle; atheistic socialism, libertinism and what is generally termed the “culture of death” will definitely oppose this. In other words, it’ll be a struggle much like early Christianity vs. paganism, and it’s going to be won with the same weapons; hence our Pope’s emphasis on the New Evangelization. 🙂
