my bf likes to, occassionally, go to a bar alone to grab a drink. we had a discussion about this for it makes me uneasy for a few reasons. i trust him 100%! i don’t trust girls, and he is alone! he also loves to eat out by himself whereas i can’t stand going to a place by myself.

but he claims that when i go out with my girlfriends it is the same thing (because once a couple guys hit on us)…he doesn’t go out to get with other girls but to enjoy a drink.

it still worries me! am i being unreasonable? we are good at communicating but the convo we had made both of us upset.

so i am seeking advice on how not to feel jealous and feel at ease with this 🙂

thank you.

If he was your husband, I would have a problem with it.

But he’s your boyfriend, so I don’t see the big deal. 🤷 Sure, you may worry, but what can you do, really? He hasn’t made any vows to you…yet.

My point of view, as a guy-(30 years old, single) is let him be. I drink, but very seldom do I do it alone. I seldom go to bars and I even less eat dinner alone in a restaurant-If I do, I bring a book or the newspaper.

I think your not being unreasonable, just a bit paranoid. If you trust him, then there shouldn’t be a problem.

However, It’s not the same thing as you going out with the gals, because they can “keep you on track”-if someone is flirting with you-they can say, “Hey, she’s got a man” or something like that.

Do girls hit on him when he is there alone? Maybe I am naive, but to me, this seems unlikely. Also, do men go to bars alone to hit on women, or do they go with friends? I don’t really hang out in bars, so I have no idea. I just suspect that the whole hitting on someone thing happens when people go out together.

Why does him going alone bother you? As someone who loves to go places alone I would like to understand this. Is it just because he’s unlike you that it bothers you? Or do you think him being alone implies he is looking to meet another woman?

I don’t agree with your statement that you trust him but don’t trust other girls. What are they going to do? Rape him in the bar? You either trust him to reject possible advances or you don’t.

I don’t really see it being too much of an issue unless he is choosing to go to these bars alone instead of being with you or his friends. However, if he doesn’t want to eat dinner alone at his house/apt, then going to a bar to enjoy a meal, watch some tv, chat casually is perfectly fine in my opinion.

When I travel week to week for work I highly prefer going to a bar alone and eating there, sitting around random people rather than being alone in my hotel room. However, when I am in the city I live in, I don’t really go to bars alone all the much since I can easily get a friend to go with me.

You said this is occasional, so I don’t think its an issue. If it were a couple times a week, maybe I would view it differently.

I get hit on by women with some regularity when I am at a bar alone, but I think it happens a bit more when I’m with people. On the contrary, when I go to a bar, it is not to pick up women or hit on women. I just like to have a conversation with the bartender or people seated around me, men or women.

I am not sure what not trusting the other women have to do with it. It boils down to trusting him or not trusting him. Him and only him. He can easily say that he isn’t single or that he is meeting his girlfriend later, etc to any women that approach him.

I am not understanding what there is in a bf/gf relationship that gives either of you the right to control how the other person uses his time or who his friends are

that exclusivity belongs to the engaged and married, and even then if it is a control issue, rather than a mutual preference for each other’s society, there is a major problem. That also does not mean married and engaged people are joined at the hip, and cannot have separate hobbies, interests and friends, but if it were my husband, I would say, it depends on the bar and who else is there.

I don’t think this even boils down to gf/bf vs engaged/married issues.

It seems to me to be a personality thing. Typically, in a relationship…or most sucessfuly relationships I’ve seen one person is an extrovert (or tends that way) and one is an introvert.

We’ll call the two Sally and Billy

Billy is an intorvert, Sally an extrovert. Sally and Billy, are married btw)

Sally loves to spend time with Billy, with her family and “out with the girls.” She craves the excitement. When she’s with Billy she wants to go Billy likes to do things such as concerts or go to the newest movies or the most popular restraunts. If she does free outdoor things she runs into people she knows and chats up EVERYONE in the grocery store. She goes to the villiage sporting events and helps at youth group. Billy is much the OP described. He likes to treat himself out to dinner, by himself and has no interest in having a buddy come with him. He ended up becoming a decon. He is quiet and would just as soon sit in the corrner and pray than get up and announce to the world that they should follow God. It did become a bone of contention in their marriage. Sally constantly tried to fit Billy in a mold he didn’t belong in.

For some people going out to dinner is just a chance to have a quiet meal with a change of scenery. What you’re really doing is being jealous of who he’s spending his time with…and he’s spending time with himself! Seems a bit silly, dosn’t it?

As long as he’s not out fishing for women LET HIM BE! Yes, a situation will come where a woman may hit on him, but this doesn’t seem to be the point. Curb your jelousy. There is NOTHING to be jealous over.

THANK YOU all for your quick responses! you all have excellent points and are right.

Moreover, thank you for putting me in reality check!!! 🙂

I’m sorry to barge in like this, but I believe that boyfriend/girlfriend relationships are too frequently and too highly understated in such threads, in fact, even somehow disparaged.

The lack of a substantive obligation to fidelity and some form of accountability (control is not right *even *in marriage) does not mean that it is a morally neutral issue. Relationships of love do not start with the moment of marriage alone. The way people act and what they say and what promises they make matters. Promises that do not take the form of a sacrament matter too. We are responsible for what feelings we awaken in people (not my words, this is Card. Wyszyński, an important person in JP2’s life). This means *no *laissez-faire with regard to what happens before the wedding. There is no laissez-faire in morality anyway. If people do not have the right *in *or *to *each other, they have a right to be given truthful communication (and as full as the relationship warrants), as well as a general honest, responsible, caring and personal treatment. Personal, even personalistic, as in not being used as a tool by another. Not a source of fun, not a source of good feelings, not a source of good mood and affirmation, not a learning aid in developing one’s taste in the opposite gender and learning relationship skills, but an actual *person *that has his own dignity, his own worth, a child of God ultimately. This precludes any form of toying and, in my view, precludes the non-accountable, self-driven independence.

But more on topic, there is nothing wrong with enjoying a drink and nothing wrong with eating out alone either. Being able to have a life of one’s own is important even when one is already married. Doing some things alone is necessary–one can’t really have a relationship in which the couple spend 100% of their time together or at least they limit time alone or away to work or chores alone. Some solitude is always necessary. As long as it doesn’t take the form of running away, being a recluse etc., this is healthy.

As for other women hitting on him, well, you really can’t get around to solving this issue by comparing how many men or women hit on each of you in given situations. Basically, you have a drink with friends, he has a drink with friends. Or alone if he wants to. The situation is more or less the same and you need to apply an equal standard. The important thing here is whether you can trust him. If he gives signs of being interested in attention by other women, if he doesn’t respect your feelings but chooses to bask in that attention, if he provokes the women to hit on him, then he can’t be trusted (at least currently) and you need to rethink the relationship. On the other hand, if he just has a drink or something to eat, then what problem would you have with it if you do the same? (Plus, maybe it’s worth mentioning that drink bars are one thing, but places where you go to eat aren’t really places for hitting on people, unless things are different where you live.)

Someone mentioned it would be a problem if he spent time alone at the cost of time with you and I agree. If time alone is more important than time spent with the other person in a relationship, then we have a problem. He doesn’t have to take you everywhere, but say, if he doesn’t have time to meet you but has the time to go out alone, then that’s a problem.

I can’t really tell you more without knowing more details. I can certainly understand how things you describe can be frustrating, I’ve been there, done that. I have my limits there and I stick to them. When they’re crossed, the other person and I are not compatible. I would suggest the same to you. Establish your *reasonable *boundaries and know why you set them. Find someone who won’t push them and won’t give you a headache. And, obviously, don’t despair over little things.

Finally, as you correctly noted, you have some communication problem there. Maybe you need to talk about your expectations as to spending time together and what kind of needs you have there and why they’re important to you. Generally, it’s easier to accept someone’s point of view and recognise his concerns as valid when you’ve heard the reasoning behind them and some justification. It’s harder when the person concerned believes himself or herself non-accountable and not obliged to offer any explanation (which is a wrong attitude in my opinion).

Oh, maybe on a personal note. I’m typically the clingier of the two and more in need of spending time together (I’m a man), but even I would go mad if I had radically to change my routines, give up my men only meetings with old pals etc., not like I wouldn’t be ecstatic for having a girl who’d actually want to spend significant time with me and be really involved, not just when it suits her in terms of no better fun to have otherwise.

This is great advice i wish i could get all of you to talk to my girlfriend and tell her the same thing because when it comes out of my mouth it just doesn’t stick for some reason… I think its SLD or Selective Listening Disease…

LOL!!!

Both men and women have that disease! When I’m reading a book, the trumpets of doomsday wouldn’t get my attention!

hahaha well sometimes it takes another person other than your sig other to give you the perspective you aimed at, and this is what i did!!!

Its a sad world it sounds like u have serious trust issues u need to figure out. How do u expect a forum full of complete strangers with no provable credintials to help u. What has this internet age we live in really done for us???

Not to be sarcastic, but posting with absolutely no respect to grammar and little ability to spell doesn’t really help make your point.

Plus, this isn’t a serious psychological issue, but one many women (and men) face. It’s good that she has come here and hasn’t looked on more secular forums or within secular books such as “He’s Just Not Into You”.

It sounds like u have major trust issues how do u expect t solve them here with complete strangers who have no provable credentials l? What has the internet done to the generation??

You’re a strange one proverbs. Again, if you want to be believable criticizing someone then clean up your own spelling and grammar.

Second, I have major trust issues because? If I were to judge your education level solely on your writing ability I’d expect you were just finishing elementary school.

Third, why is it wrong to ask strangers for help. More often bartenders and hair dressers have offered advice than a psychologists ever would. Boyfriend jealousy is NOT something typically to go to a psychologist for unless it’s manic.

Fourth, as I’ve said above there’s nothing new under the sun, random people have been dispensing advice since time began. I think its better someone can come to CAF than Oprah or Glamor Magazine. It has nothing to do with the Internet.

Sorry didn’t realize I posted twice didn’t think the first one was posted as for grammar sorry I can only do so much from a phone is that how u judge everyone in the world based off their grammar seems pretty shallow. Again Im sorry my phone has tiny buttons and I have fat ELEMENTARY fingers!!!

So, you’re judging the OP on Internet usage and you’re on a phone and you can’t spell out “you” or use proper punctuation? No, it’s not an excuse.

I’m not judging everyone on grammar and spelling…I just found it ironic that you are posting ON the Internet about the PERILS of Internet without writing in a way that’s appealing (or readable).
