I’m looking for a book that lists and describes all of the Catholic orders. Ideally something that has a few pages on the Dominicans, Franciscans in all their permutations, Maryknoll, Augustinians, Norbertines - the whole gamut! A description, history, basic stats, etc. - a kind of encyclopedia of the Catholic religious orders.

Anyone every seen such a thing? Thanks.

There is such a guide. It’s called A Guide to Religious Ministries for Catholic Men and Women. Your parish might have a copy, or you can contact the publisher for one at religiousministries.com/.

The information is very basic. But, more importantly is has the contact information of vocations directors from almost every order or community in the US you can imagine, as well as every single diocese and archdiocese. With this information I would suggest picking 5 or 6 orders or communities that get your attention and simply ask for more information from them directly. I would also suggest contacting your own diocesan vocations director for information regarding diocesan seminary. From there, start narrowing down your list and begin making visits.

Discernment can be very fun and enjoyable, but it can also be easily overwhelming. Good luck and God be with you.
