Hello,

I would like to ask if there is a proper way or a guideline on how to discern for a vocation? How will I know God’s will for me?

Thanks and God bless!

I’d suggest starting by finding a spiritual director who can help you. It’s very valuable to have someone you can talk with about your spiritual life and where God may be calling you. I’m sure your spiritual director will suggest regular prayer, Mass attendance, and other practices that will help you discern.

I think the first step is desiring it in your heart.

Do you feel God calling you?

This is just my personal opinion, but I’ve always thought if you have to discern too hard about anything in life (job, career, vocation) then either it’s not for you or the answer isn’t clear and you should ask again later.

Just say some prayers, research options, and ask God to point you the right way.

As of now, I don’t have a spiritual director. Thanks for the idea btw. Does it need to be a priest or nun? Or maybe a lay person?

Since when I was child, I’ve been dreaming of having my own family. So I desire marriage. But right now, based on my realizations and reflections God is trying to show me or consider a single life. That’s why I got confused and I think really need to discern it again.

Thanks for this. ☺️ My first discernment I was called to a married life. What I did was, I devoted myself to prayer, scripture and reflection. I didn’t have a spiritual director yet.

As what I’m experiencing right now, God is trying to show me a single life. Maybe it’s time for me to visit religious orders/communities and speak to sisters, nun and priest. I haven’t imagined myself living in a convent but it looks pretty good to try and experience it by myself.

I’d like ask again coz I think God is trying to show me living a single life.

If you’re quite young, He may want you to be single for a while until you are ready to make another choice.
Sometimes God doesn’t reveal permanent answers right away.

I was strucked by this statement. I’m 27 and just went through a heart break. Yeah, I believe that God is teaching me something. Thanks btw. ☺️

A spiritual director can be a lay person. If you are discerning a religious vocation, however, I would suggest an SD who is in a religious vocation (priest, monk, nun, etc). If you’re not yet sure what kind of vocation you’re called to, any spiritual director (priest, religious, or lay person) would be a fine person to assist you. You can always change later, if needed, once your path becomes clearer. Praying for you. God bless.

I will read about the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Thanks.

Normally I would say a layperson would be fine, but in your case I think it might be best to have someone who is pursuing the vocation you are interested in. If you want to become a sister, then a sister might be a great choice for a spiritual director.

Get a copy of “to Save a Thousand Souls” by Fr. Brett Brannen.
It is specifically about diocesan priesthood but answers questions about discernment and how one knows also.
