Is there a short answer to where the Canon of Scripture came from?

The Catholic would say it was determined by the authority of the Catholic Church. But what is the prevailing view among Protestants as to how the Canon of Scripture was decided? (especially the NT)

The prevailing view among Protestants is that God, having inspired the scriptures, caused a majority of people to accept the books in the Bible as Canon. Most do see that the Catholic Church assisted in this by declaring what was already known, but believe God would have brought it together in it’s accepted form even if they hadn’t.
 
I think your average Protestant would have no problem admitting the Canon comes from the Catholic Church, except that they would say that it was the work of ECF’s which to then is somehow different because it was pre-Constantine.

With this view, how did “Christians” define it? There was not unanimity in the early Church as to which books belonged. Today Protestants have the same defined Canon. How did they arrived at the settled Canon?

What do you mean that the work of the ECF’s is “different” because it was pre-Constantine?
 
Based on history, I think the OT canon existed in Jesus day.

The NT canon took about 400 years to be recognized in a church council. But, lists of canonical books were compiled by different local churches based on what they knew were of apostolic origins.

Right, but it took Catholic bishops, and the Pope’s mandate guided by the Holy Spirit, to make the final say. 👍 But you already knew this, I’m sure.

I don’t think anyone here denied the Catholic Church had a hand in it.
