I was watching/have been watching the EWTN Mass for a while. I noticed and have wondered that Fr. Angelus alters the text of the prayers at “Pray brethren…” he states “my sacrifice and yours”. fundamentally, there is nothing inherently wrong with this phrasing, but isn’t it in line with the same arguments that many have about priests changing the text, putting in their own words. the official translation is still “our sacrifice”…

comments? thoughts?

My Missalette, and the Sacramentary, has the wording as
Pray brethren, that our sacrifice may be . . .
but note that other words which seem more suitable under the circumstances, such as friends, dearly beloved, etc. may be used. It appears that the discretion only applies to the word brethren, but that is not entirely clear.

The Tridentine form is my sacrifice and yours. He may be the victim of habit.

we done get EWTN here, but if that is what happens, then you are correct. it is his own personal improvisation outlawed by GIRM 24, RS, etc.

even if he is anticipating a more literal translation of the latin, he cannot use any other text until the new one is promulgated.

well, maybe it is true that no one’s perfect. at least he not dancing around with a tambourine, i guess.

which book says this? is it the roman missal (a rubric), or a private missal (description)? is it in the rubrics, because the general instruction doesn’t indicate that variation is allowed at that part? just wondering what the ‘official’ status of what you’re talking about might be.

This is what I’m afraid of (and I’m afraid it’s happening to me as well): we’re all turning into the “liturgy police.” Lately, esp. when I went to Mass last Sat. am, 10 EMHC, one of whom fractioned the Most Precious Blood into the chalices for the laity after It had be consecrated in the flasks, despite the presence of both the priest and a deacon, I’ve wondered if I shouldn’t just make a silent act of reverence and reparation and mark it down to either ignorance or willfullness, either of which God can deal with in His Own good time? This wasn’t my parish, thank God.

The missal explicitly states that other suitable words may be used. This is not liturgical abuse. When other words are used in places where there is no explicit permission to change them, which is liturgical abuse.

I believe these are the words/wording being proposed for the new Missal, I don’t have a problem with them, though I wish I had a transporter to energize away those EMHC’s !

Hrmm, I haven’t seen the EMHC’s on there, I have seen deacons and other men that appear they could be seminarians.

As far as the line you are mentioning, I believe they use the 2002 Missal which hasn’t reached the general population yet. HOWEVER the wording he is using does appear in english translation the TLM.

Unfortunately not much information is available about the 2002 Missal but I would not be surprised if they cleaned up a lot of the translations.

I see a misunderstanding, there are no EMHC"s used at EWTN services, I was just stating a general feeling.

I have very much respect and appreciation for what EWTN provides.

If all you can say about EWTN is to complain about a comparatively small point that can be chalked up to old habit then things must be other-wise “hunky-dory” where you are. I can say that I would be ever-so-grateful if liturgical mistakes where I live were so minor.

Aside from some mistakes here and there (which is bound to happen for any priest or deacon), usually there aren’t any problems with the EWTN tv Mass.

The Mass not on TV, but at the Shrine is probably as traditional of a Novus Ordo you can get according to some folks here in Orlando.

Say Everyone,

It appears to me that most all of you view EWTN the same way I do - and consider it to be a reliable, authentic Catholic voice. I would like to add this for the good of the order. Our family (my wife, 6 kids, and myself) made a pilgrimmage to EWTN and had a very blessed experience.
There is a spiritual beauty that permeates everyone there. We got to meet Raymond Arroyo, as well as the other layworkers behind the scenes. It is my opinion that Mother Angelica’s network is doing a great work in portraying and nurturing authentic Catholicism.

God Love Ya from the Diocese of Lincoln Nebraska,
Jim B
